I can see that ground being a massive problem for them, nobody wanted to go, they had a perfectly adequate ground already in their heartland

Yes, redevelop that east stand (if they could) and it would have been fine.
I always thought there was a problem with them building that East stand, but then I discovered this:

Had they built that, I reckon Upton Park would have been one of the best football grounds in the country. Instead, they've ended up with an oversized, non-atmospheric bowl just about outside of their heartland - all because the owners got it on the cheap. They've thrown their soul in the BIN.
Not one of them didn't want to move from Upton Park. Made me remember it isn't the fans who wanted it, by and large.
