You make sweeping statements which are worthless. Hence my abrasive reply

Perhaps you are being a bit ignorant and arrogant yourself mate. This is an interesting thread full of people discussing their own experiences and views. Mine is that drinking 3 times a week could be considered as an issue as pointed out in the AC documentary. You think that it is all rot, that does not make you right.

You also said drinking three days a week would not be classed as alcohol dependency. That is also a sweeping statement if you want to play that game.

Yep......need to consider what those three days constitute as well. A pint twice a week and two glasses of wine on a Saturday, or a 6 pints and a bottle of scotch 3 times a week ? Very different scenarios.

I have edited my post because yes you are right, I should not have called you a tw@t. You however are making the same sweeping judgments as I am by stating that drinking 3 days a week is not alcohol dependency, it may very well be for that individual.

I’m neither ignorant or arrogant on the subject, given I’ve owned four pubs and now am a quality manager for a major brewery. Of course I have a vested interest but the statements you made are without any substance.

Expand the argument to true reasoning and you’ll find I will engage fully and we’ll likely agree on many issues. I can give you all the information on the way alcohol is consumed and the trends. Lads night outs are changing and for good reason.

Ok, then my point was that you cannot state with certainty that drinking 3 nights a week every week is not alcohol dependency. Surely it depends on quality and way in which that person drinks. If for example they have 3 day benders from the moment they finish work on a Friday through to the Sunday night then that would be a dependency on alcohol.

To balance the argument, you are correct that I cannot say drinking 3 nights a week is always alcohol dependency, that could be a small glass of wine with a meal for example.

I am intrigued as to why we do not align alcohol with other drugs however when we talk about reliance, dependency or addiction. Genuinely interested to hear your thoughts on it especially as you work in the industry.

Sorry to be a dick but drinking 3 days a week is not disciplined, it is more disciplined than drinking every day of course but three days a week would be classed as alcohol dependency,

This thread is excellent for many reason, but to pick you up on your assertion (not the dick part) what medical evidence do you have for three days a week is classed as alcohol dependency?

I thought I would see how far I can get in January without a drink - so nearly took the "sod it" approach today, but kept my nerve. No doubt back to work Monday will be harder. Last year I just made sure I had more non-drinking than drinking nights each month.

You have answered most of the points yourself.

Yes alcohol to some can become , a reliance, a dependency or addiction. To the vast majority though it’s an enjoyable social experience. While there’s some that still go out to get pissed the trend now is the experience. Premium drinking is now how the industry sees it. The Carlings of the world are dramatically falling in sales, being replaced by premium offerings. The consumption per hectolitre is reducing meaning less is being sold.

Binge drinking is on the decline. The youth are viewing alcohol in a very different way. This is Bourne out by sales so can be easily collated..

As far as seeing it as a drug, yes of course it is and we all promote safe drinking. However the vast majority do see it as controllable just like those that choose a spliff occasionally.

I am sure I read that the current 18-25 are very low consumers of alcohol compared to previous generations by quite some way. A huge number are health conscious and so I guess hangovers and early gym sessions do not mix, sure cost comes into it too! This must be contributing to the growing number of pub and nightclub shutdowns across the UK as well.

That's the key - one day at a time. You've done today so now just see if you can do tomorrow and for the time being look no further than that. Good luck.

Well done, it will get easier. A lot of it is habit.

As some have said, a lot of it is habit. I never really thought I had a drink problem and probably still don't - I have not been pissed up for years, but I have beeen partial to a couple of glasses of wine or a couple of bottles of beer a night. Once I realised there were very few nights I did not have at least one drink, I decided to cut down and realised pretty quickly that it is harder than you think to stop. The day at a time, monthly target approach works for me.
Mrs N tells me that there is no point going alcohol free on some nights if I am going to binge drink on the others - she has a point, but is being very unfair if she thinks I do that!
