Good effort. I am the same with avoiding routes back on to the booze. 6 weeks down and really feel great, as dos the bank balance, also come off of all medication and anti depressants.

Fantastic stuff. Really chuffed for you. Similarly, physically I feel it the best shape I have been in for the last 10 years - probably more. I reckon over the last 42 days I have not drunk around 200 pints that I would have otherwise. And the scary thing is, that is probably a conservative estimate.

Keep going mate.

I've gone right off drinking over the last few months. Not sure why but not feeling the beer and never been a wine drinker. I did try Seedlip while on holiday but made the mistake of trying it with the aromatic tonic which is pretty rank. I wouldn't say I'll go teetotal but drink so little now I don't think it would take much to take the final step.

Hardly ever drank at home anyway but I have wanted to get away from the fizzy drinks to cut down on sugar. I tried the Coke Zero products but they all seem to have aspartame and that doesn't agree with my body - seems to act as a diuretic at night.

Good luck to all those trying to give up booze.

What I have found are the Teiseirre non sugar syrups in Waitrose. These are not cheap and are a posh squash but last quite well and very refreshing.

I like lime and soda...

The days of lime and soda are over. "Sugary, carbonated or fruit-based juice drinks just won't do" for those seeking a booze-free alternative.

At least, that is the view of Seedlip, which claims to be making the world's first distilled non-alcoholic spirits.

We exist to solve this dilemma. What do you drink when you're not drinking?" says Ben Branson, founder of the Chilterns-based business.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-49355057

Yeah- they’re missing the obvious choice- soda and a SLICE of lime- which is not sugary and is not a fruit based juice drink. I go for a pint of it with ice, and more often than not pubs don’t charge for it at all so you can have a night out without even reaching for your wallet.

I’m always with other people who are drinking beer / spending money in the pub so I don’t feel so bad, but I probably buy peanuts / crisps a bit more often to feel like I am actually contributing something to the premises I am frequenting!

As others have said, I’m not really keen on non-alcoholic versions of drinks that taste the same as the alcoholic version- and cost the same by the sounds of it. Just don’t see the point of deciding to stop consuming something, then seeking out fake versions of it. I know vegetarians can end up doing the same with meat products, but I don’t really get the psychology of it..

Day 1 of going sober here.

No real reason; I don't think my drinking is too bad but I have booked a personal trainer which starts next week. Seems dumb to be spending money on that and on booze. Plus I wouldn't get any decent results.

Am going to see how long I can go though. Previous best is about 6 months.

Does anyone drink anymore ? Seems nsc is a haven for teetotalers and gym fanatics nowadays

Don't forget the NSC road saints - never, ever even 1mph over the limit.

Maybe they should open up mineral water bars at the amex where everyone can meet up try mew brands of water. Seems from this site Barber is missing a trick there

You obviously don't read the Fridat thread or the Restaurant 2019 one then! Nor at least half the posts on here on a Saturday after a home game :drink:

Good luck to anyone giving it up though. Can only be good for mental and physical health as well as the bank balance.

I’ve not tried the spirits but I’m pretty keen on AF beer. Brewdog Nanny State and Adnams Ghost Ship being the best. The Harvey’s Ones are impressive too and in a few pubs now. Most I can do without (the bland lagers - Heineken , becks, Budweiser etc ) including St Peters “without” which is like a fizzy Horlicks.

It helped me a lot when I first gave up / solving that cold initial craving etc although I probably drink them less now. And they’ve improved a lot from a decade or so ago. And yes lime and soda is my go to pub drink. Coke Zero, tea, water and diet ginger beer at home does the trick
Now on Week 55. Glad I’ve got through it. My recent holiday was tough with ice cold beer and glasses everywhere - drank water instead ! But emerged unscathed.

PS: the Amex could get its act together here .not a lot of choice for AF (in WSU at least) - a £2 water basically. But I switch to tea/bovril when it gets colder.

A conservative average of just under 5 pints a day? Jesus, very very well done for your 6 weeks.

Today I have my first hangover since New Year's Day. Hangovers are shit.

Yesterday was a friend's 50th birthday party and I took a look at our booze stash - beers, ciders and wines of all types and didn't fancy any of them so decided I wasn't going to drink. However, just before we went I suddenly fancied cider - something I've not had for a long, long time - so I did.

I probably put 6 or 7 cans of Scrumpy Jack away over the course of 6 hours which was enough to get me pretty drunk indeed and I'm paying the price today.

The key thing for me is to not drop into the "drinking at home for no real reason at all" habit, so I won't expect to have a drink again this week.

Bit of a sore one, but has anyone ever gone from complete lush head, done a medicated Detox and come out of the other side? Ideally my aim is to give up booze completely, so any tips would be welcome👍I am on day three? Cheers.

A while ago I went from doing at least a bottle of red every night of the week to nothing. I don't think it was any sort of medical dependency as such, but was an awful habit. I told myself that if I stopped then I wouldn't get to sleep for a few weeks and my work would suffer, but I just stopped one day and never started again. The thought of red wine now is off putting. I am now pretty much tee-total, though I'll have a drink if I want one, but I would say that's less than 1 a month. Top be fair I don't miss the drink at all - maybe miss the socialisation, but I'm old enough not to need to go to pubs any more.

Day 49.

Roll on the half century tomorrow :)

I won't pretend that I haven't been sorely tempted at times over the past 50 days to have 'just the one' after a particularly trying day - and there have been plenty of those just recently.

I'm getting no support at home so thank goodness for NSC. I truly believe that without this thread I would have crumbled by now.

Odd where you find the support when you need it.

This is an inspirational thread. Thank you to everyone who has posted. After a grim year so far in every part of life I was aware I was drinking too much too often, the classic self medication through alcohol: buy a four pack after work, have a couple on the train, one walking back from the station, maybe via the pub, last one at home then a whisky or vodka nightcap after wine with dinner. Not every day but too many of them. I'm fairly sure that I drank something almost every day from May to August. Couldn't say for sure but possibly from March. So a couple of weeks ago set myself the day after an upcoming wedding I had to go to as when I'd stop.

So I'm on Day 9 today, found the first 6 days anxious, but now that's cleared. Not sure my sleep has improved but I've got a lot of other stresses so I'm not surprised, but I know I've spent far less and I'm sure there'll be other appreciable benefits soon. Yesterday was the toughest day, round a mates for a bbq where alcohol flowed freely and my abstinence wasn't viewed sympathetically, but then I didn't explain so maybe I'm partly responsible.

Don't know yet if I'm giving up for good, or if I'll be drinking again tomorrow, or if it'll be special occasions only, I haven't got a plan, but for the time being I'd like to get to a month if only to show myself I can get through some of the bigger challenges life sends us without having to numb my brain to do so, and I know that if I can do that I can do much more.

Great effort and I promise the benefits will come - I wish I had done this years ago. For sure, for me the first week or so was the hardest, and you've cracked that bit. I didn't set myself a 'plan' either as that seemed a bit daunting and a bit scary too, to be perfectly honest. Plus I didn't want to set myself up to fail. So I have just done one day at a time, and that became weeks and now nearly months. Just one day a time.

Keep going and best of luck. Sounds like yesterday was a big challenge that you have overcome.

One day at a time.

Nearly about 10 months without here....got to the stage where I was staying late at work to avoid coming home and starting on the Cava, thats when I knew it was an issue, when I was counting the minutes til 5 o'clock as thats acceptable..Thought I'd just have a break and here I still am....I miss it every now and then, but I don't miss the headaches, the hang overs and the complete horror if someone puts in a 9am meeting and I'm still Mrs Foggy McFogg Head...

Internet has its good points I guess. Being an old hack on this medium, been online for nearly 30 years I've watched it bloom in many ways, some good, some bad. No need to find it odd that you find an online home that helps you.
