Which one/s?
I went off craft beers ages ago so I'm afraid my taste in beer is a little basic. I found stepping down from my usual 5-6% "cooking lager" (Kronenbourg/Holsten etc) to Carlsberg (3.4%) wasn't hard and since then it's been quite easy to drink the alcohol-free stuff. Lidl Perlenbacher Pils (0%) is decent. Heineken 0.0 is equally beery if chilled and you have a thirst on.

I'd hate to think what that would have looked like when I was drinking. Not one green at all and probably orange every night (do you count 1 bottle of wine as 1 or 3?). Horrifying! Anyhow, I'm green now, every day of the flipping year, and have been for years - YAY!!

What happened for you from Sept 16th to 23rd - was that an awfully long birthday celebration??
Apart from a full green month 12 years ago, mine is all red for 30 years. Probably £5K a year at current prices. I have more things to worry about than how much I drink and how much I spend on it. Frankly.

Every time I try doing a stint I don’t sleep. Probably why I drink in the first place 🤦🏻‍♂️

Which one/s?
https://mashgang.shop/ Their Stoop Pilsner is more than decent for a drink or two at home in front of the football. Wouldn’t bother drinking at home anymore now I have this.

Guinness zero is the best stout though there are some decent ones out there. Again, Mash Gang do an okay one but they are generally like drinking a soft drink, not a beer.

https://www.bristolbeerfactory.co.uk/products/clear-head Clear Head IPA is nice and readily available.

https://www.onlywithlove.co/collections/af-beers-page Juicy AF is nice. Havent tried their other offerings yet.

Quaff at Fiveways have a good selection as do The Drop in the Open Market.

Signalman sell Lucky Saint by the pint if you need a pub fix or are going out for a roast.

Why do you abstain then?Is your life worse now than when you were drinking?
Couldn't juggle my drinking with work life and became dependent on it to mask what I was feeling inside. I am better with being a parent now, but still have mental health issues whilst being on a bit of medication.(which didn't work whilst drinking bundles)

Today marks the end of my dry year. I had to rethink and recalibrate my relationship to alcohol and as I was turning 50 I decided to challenge myself to one year without a drink.

I’ve lost 12kg in weight (nearly 2 stone) and managed to get new PBs in every length of run I entered. Even knocking nearly 20 mins off my marathon time to get a 3:22.

I’ve had to face all manner of social and work situations which would normally involve a drink or 3 and to be honest it was so much easier than I thought it would be. I even did 4 days in Marseille for our first European adventure without anything stronger than a coffee.

I am looking forward to having a drink again. There is definitely a place for it in my life but after more than 30 years of drink being an ever-present part of my existence, it has been revelatory to see what it’s like without.

I don’t want to sound too evangelical about it, but this has been just what I needed and if anyone feels they are in a similar position, I definitely recommend trying a year without.

Cheers!

I have been thinking a lot about this recently. On one hand I really want to do it but on the other I know I’ll miss it and worry about what I’ll do instead! I remember when I gave up smoking, I just put it out and thought ‘I didn’t enjoy that’ and that was it! I have had similar thoughts recently with the beer…

Running is not for me, I’ve tried it and with a big family and the life that goes with it, I find it something to look forward to at the end of the day…

I fear that I’ll just want to go to bed early and I don’t think that’s gonna work…

I stopped drinking 9 days ago. Mainly to lose weight. My sleep has not be affected. I'm feeling crap in the mornings but think this is a virus (Mrs T has similar symptoms). Despite the vast quantities of wine I've been necking for the last 30 years, it hasn't been a problem stopping. I may be lucky and not have an addictive predisposition. I'll start again when I have shed 10 kilos. Unfortunately I've actually added a kilo over the last week. Most peciliar.

Is it home drinking or the social pub drinking that you think you will miss?

I’m not a runner but when working from home I take myself out for a walk once I am finished for the day to clear my head and get that break before the evening.

Good man, Harry

I stopped 4th Feb 1996. In my experience, the first 28 years were the worst.
