I love Galleon Ships and Ghosteen.....some of the best he’s ever written....and on his 17th studio album. Most artists have run dry long before this milestone.

Totally agree with all your thoughts on the record, but I have bought tickets for the Berlin show. We did discuss if it would work, and I was dubious about seeing Skeleton Tree in an aircraft hanger but he pulled this off...just. The crowd were impeccable during the more tender moments and the “feeling” of such a large but silent crowd added to the show. I hope it works again.

Did you go to either of the Alfred Shows? I went to the Grinderman rehearsals....was surreal. He performed one song with his hand on the wife’s head singing to her preacher man style. I’ve got some stunning photos somewhere.

I got a ticket to the first one which I recall was the Grinderman rehearsal. A mere £20. He did end up playing Bad Seed stuff such as Ship Song, Mercy Street etc on keyboard. Was a very special evening. Didn’t get to the second- there was a Resident Record competition for tickets but you had to re-design a Nick Cave Album cover in multi media style so no way was I ever going to get through that.

Same gig as I went to. Yes, it was very special. I remember Nick Cave arrived in a red rally jacket. And yes, Grinderman rehearsal then requests which was inevitably Bad Seeds. I also remember getting the Rounder newsletter which included Nick Cave at King Alfred in the tickets section. I had no idea he was rehearsing there, let alone would sell tickets for it. I called Rounder first thing in the morning to check it wasn’t a misprint, or there was somehow another Nick Cave....and bagged two tickets. Given where he is today, it all seems like another life now.

The Undivided Five by A Winged Victory for the Sullen.

As good as ever, a stunning mix of arrangements and big chords. A top score/soundtrack would not do it justice.

Kiwanuka, the new album by Michael Kiwanuka. It's magnificent. A beautiful album that manages to sound like it could have been made by Marvin Gaye or Bill Whithers in their prime yet doesn't sound like he's copying either or anyone.

He's really, really good.

It is. It's not quite as good as Love & Hate but, then again, that has a legitimate claim to be my album of the decade.
