Thanks for this! Giving it a spin now and already the first track is right up my street.

Shades of the more jazz minded Nyabinghi musicians like Cedric Brooks. With that dark bass and flute there's even some shades of Count Ossie and Ras Michael in there too. Then it goes off in a different direction that puts me in mind of The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.

Now onto track two and loving that too. I've a feeling this album is going to be an absolute cracker for me

I'm an enormous fan of Mats Gufstaffon. Had the pleasure of seeing the 28-piece offshoot, Fire! Orchestra which he 'leads'. Also in the ear-splitting Peter Brotzmann tentet.

Don’t know if these have been mentioned but big shout out for Yellow River Blue by Yu Su. Kind of trippy, dub ethno boogie electronica. Really lovely. Also Waking The Dreaming Body by Karima Walker. Dreamy but dense folk electronics and vocals.

All new names to me. I'm a jazz fan, especially spiritual jazz, but some of the 'freer' stuff I've struggled with.

That first track is almost foreboding. It's very dark. I can imagine poets like Michael Smith or Mutabaruka telling stories over that.

Looks like I've got some exploring to do here. Thanks for the lead.

It's from 2020 -- CV19 has affected my buying and listening habits -- but I've just got my mitts on Defeat by Fire, which is their best outing yet. The trio are augmented by a brilliant brass arrangement. Highly recommended if you like avant garde jazz.

I really loved The Hands by Fire, when it came out, with its deep bass groove but Defeat is a far stronger jazz record, as you suggest.

I hope to see this group at some time in the future. Gustafson has mothballed The Thing who are an awesome trio of noisy, freer jazz.

Yes, big big fan of The Thing. Mats is playing at Brotzmann's 80th next month

Really like this new one, Already, Always, from local lady Bess Atwell.

Lovely voice, a nice '2nd' album.

Sebastian Plano - Save Me Not.

New artist to me. This came out in July this year. I'll be going back over his older stuff as a result.

Also, can't remember If I mentioned Yann Tiersen's latest album...Kerber.

Nothing from him ever disappoints me.
