Well! I'm shocked to see 'diamond dave' get a mentch, as he has been so consistently crap (as have VH and Sammy Hagar) since their parting.

I'd certainly recommend to you bigc, to make sure you have Montrose's first two albums in your collection, then also Noiseworks s/t - which is excellent throughout . Perhaps, if you like a bit o' bluesy with a singer who rivals Paul Rodgers - try Robin Trower's "Twice Removed From Yesterday".

its surprisingly good though...thats the thing...there are a few hidden classics on the album...its standout compared to the rest of his patchy solo stuff.

ill try out your recommendations

Along that line - howsabout 'Song Cycle' by Van Dyke Parks? This is consistent and as good as anything of that style - often likened to Brian Wilson/Beach Boys best efforts.

Yeah, Van Dyke Parks is someone I kept meaning to listen to but never got around to it. Thanks for the reminder but it's hard to find ways of listening to interesting stuff - particularly now that Peel has gone.

What we need is an NSC music library and we're sorted.

a life with brian - flowered up

early 90's indie band, similar to happy mondays but split as they were beginning to assemble a following.

promised lots with phobia, weekender and take it but shambolic live

Niagara - Inspiral Carpets .
They too were dodgy when i saw them live, but I think I drew this impression when they were burned out on a US tour and about ready to split.

Good call, bought this album when it first came out and it wasn't bad at all. Where is it now?

They split up after that sadly. Dave Ford the singer is starting a solo career and the other two are in new bands.

'Colossal Youth' by The Young Marble Giants is a wonderful album from early 80's. Sounds like nothing else even now. Kurt Cobain rated it as one of his favourite records.

Following on from TLO's mention of the great Terry Hall, I'll add 'Waiting' by The Funboy Three which was their second and last album and is absolutely superb. Never been released on CD for some reason.

Good call re Colossal Youth. As I have that and the Terry Hall I'd better look into The Funboy Three. :)
