Album that sank without trace but were superb

There are occasional releases by artists that are often obscure, or perhaps by bands that have gone 'over their peak' and are somehow ignored completely by the public, undeservedly. Occasionally stuff resurges or is championed long afterwards (eg Nick Drake) but some.....just doesn't.

This thread invites you to mention recordings that excelled but sank. Please namedrop and with some clue as to style of the music.;

EMF - Stigma (far better than their previous teeny synthpop 'hit' stuff)

NEDS Atomic Dustbin - Brain Blood Volume (tough and fairly direct, Neds get edgey - and with powerful guitar, almost metal)

David Baerwald - Triage (shades of Floyd/Roger Waters)

Suzanne Vega - Songs In Red and Gray (it's the only cd I own by her because it's excellent. Powerful lyrics that she seems to mean, spanks yer alanis morrisettes and fiona apples into puree)

Townes Van Zandt - Far Cry From Dead (folk singer/songwriter bordering on country)

Marianne Faithful - A Secret Life. (smoulders like Leonard Cohen, brillaint arrangement and instrumentation)

The Damned - Grave Disorder (they've always been great, but this one shows all their much-overlooked talents for writing great tunes)

The End - Introspection (for fans of latter-sixties psych, soft but not toytown, produced by Bill Wyman, wonderfully, and yet... sold very few. [one for zeffarelly in particular, and fans of such as Art, Kaleidoscope, Idle Race])

Blimey, there are so many.

The one that immediately springs to mind is David Ackles' American Gothic a very under-rated singer/songwriter, I listened to it not long ago and it still sounded great.

Another fave of mine is Justin Adams' Desert Road, blues with a north African flavour. Or there's a fantastic acoustic album by Baba Maal with Mansour Seck called Djam Leelii - often ignored for his more electric stuff. I'm sure there are many more, but I can't be arsed to rifle through my collection.

There are some that I thought were neglected masterpieces but on listening to them again, sounded pony. The United States of America album springs to mind; I liked Doctors of Madness in the mid-70s but I suspect I'd find their albums unbearable now.

But the reverse happens. You make a good point about some albums being reassessed, Nick Drake being the obvious example. Don't forget that the Velvet Underground sound pitifully few albums - it was said that only 300 people bought the first album but they all went out to form bands.

Terence Boylan "Suzy" (1980). It features Steely Dan, amongst others. Stupendous songs/vocals/Lyrics/musicanship/production. What more could you ask for? His previous release (self titled) was also a phenomenal album.

To some people it might seam dull and boring but musically it's just brilliant. They wanted to make a more melodic album and un like the Stereophonic's try and re invent themselves with each new album.

Anyway I think we will agree to disagree on this one!

:p

Kenny Thomas - Voices. This bloke was so much better than Harry Connick Jnr. The album was superb.

Geneis - Calling All stations

grerat album - sunk without trace as the American fans couldn't cope without Phil Collins and then the band just disappeared from view

Strange from one of the biggest money earning bands of the 70s and 80s
