Jack Whent, who played war-time football for Albion, and signed for us after the war in 1947 (and captained the side in the 1948-49 season) was Canadian (came over with the Canadian forces, signed as an amateur for Arsenal, but played mostly for the Albion).

I don't know what happened there. This is what I wrote in response to Lenny Rider mentioning the December 1984 match against Wimbledon:

That was my first Albion game, having persuaded my father to take me to a game. We sat in the Lego Stand. Stuart Evans scored for Wimbledon. Was Worthington's goal the equaliser or the winner? I can't remember, and it's been frustrating me ever since. In either case, who scored the other goal for us?
The first game I went to without a supervising adult. My mum thought I was at the cinema. Was bang in line with the shot in the southern bit of the east. Moved to the north after that.

Christ him & Ashley Neal must be the worst 2 players ever. I remember we were so shit and there was a glimmer of hope that this player from Arsenal could actually lift the gloom around the place. Blimey was he even a footballer? Absolutely awful!!! Wonder what became of him.

It was the winner. What a first game old boy 👍⚽️ (Danny Wilson had previously equalised)

Met up with the legendary Hans Kraay at the Caxton last night, and meeting up with the mild mannered 🤣 Dutchman I got to thinking, who was the first player Albion signed from outside Great Britain and Ireland?

To my shame, I forgot about Denis Foreman, a man I was honoured to help on his final journey, and thought it was either Jacob Cohen or Moshe Gariani in 1980, but was there anyone before dear old Denis?
I played footy up Easthill Park in the 60s with Kevin and Michael. What talents.

I had little idea at the time what a legend the old man was.

Not an advance, @GT49er - quite the opposite in fact (a "retreat", I guess).

As per Tim Carder/Roger Harris in the Albion A-Z (the club Who's Who), Whent was actually born in ..... Darlington, County Durham before he headed over to Vancouver and then Berkeley, California.

it's pronounced Best Sussex
Pest Sussex...

I'm usually good at these things, but assuming we are discounting all of Ireland, I can't think of any other name than those mentioned.

What I intended to write in reply to Ian. Something went wrong:

I can help you!

He worked with a family member in Reykjavik at a finance company before moving to Sweden and then coming back.
