There'd have to be something particularly special in the performance or circumstances to justify a 10.
I'd not put a number to it or particularly define it, because as we know from Spinal Tap, once you go to 10 you've nowhere else to go.
From past Albion performances, can you give an example of a 10?

Not firmly, although that says as much about my crap football memory and the relatively small number of games I actually see as it does anything else.
I'd consider it for Trossard at Anfield last season, given:
He scored 3 goals (I'm not wedded to the "has to score 3 or more" thing incidentally),
First game under a new manager,
Away game at a "big" club.

Although instinctively I'm reluctant for a game we only drew, part of me thinks if he'd played that bit better maybe we could have won, no matter how unfair that is. There's no such thing as perfection at the end of the day.

Incidentally, having checked the BBC match report to see if he'd made any awful howlers that I'd forgotten, I see he got player of the match with 8.71 on the Rate the Players bit. I'd say that's probably about right.

Realistically, we're probably looking for a man of the match performance in a final that we actually win (or something similar) for me to give a 10. I'd be closer to handing one to MacAllister for his penalty under pressure against Man U last season than I would be for most obvious match performances.

Verbruggen 7 - solid, good distribution
Igor 7 - good. Cash has done us a few times, not today
Webster 8 - magnificent
Veltman -8 Watkins wasn't getting past without doing something very special
Dunk 7 - much stronger this week
Gilmour 7 - well Villa didn't run through us today part due to Billy but also the others
Buonanotte 6 - well, 8 defensively, 4 going forward
Pedro 7
Adingra 8 - best game in a long time
Gross 7 - unlucky not to score
Welbeck 6 - not really on it

Enciso 7 - superb cameo

Veltman very good defensively, but offered nothing at all going forward. In the context of today’s game, that was fine, but we need to carry more threat down the right in the remaining games.

Given our games are against Newcastle, Chelsea and Man United I would be quite happy for Veltman to remain at right back and be 'very good defensively' in those games.

This is purely my opinion.....

Webster - good in general, but WAY too many misplaced passes (they'd be called unforced errors in tennis).
Adingra - Great energy and making chances, but surely an AFCON winner should be able to strike the ball reasonably hard when shooting?

Having said that, a great team result against a top four in-form Premier League side with a top-class keeper (who had more to do than ours!).

PS Dunk was always available to receive the ball and I don't think I saw him put a foot wrong in the whole game - maybe once, but he recovered the situation admirably.

He gets forward though, just not in the way or frequency most people want or expect i.e. sprinting down the wing and overlapping. I’m fine with this and see it as quite intelligent play as he’s not obvious for an opponent to pick up.

He rarely has. The greatest Albion team in history, 2022/23, included the supreme defending of Veltman, he just let Solly, Gross et al do all the attacking.

Wardy would have got an 11 in the Walsall game he scored 4 after all.

(I was at the England U21 game)
That Mellor 3 Ward 4 Walsall 0 game was the season before I started going. My father took me to the u21 game, I loved it, so he took me to the Brighton Bolton game on 08.10.1977...the rest is history as they say.

Suggest you watch MOTD2. He was brilliant and the pundits made him the main part of their analysis
Just watched it. The ball to Gross was excellent as was the cross in the second half which was scrambled for a corner, but two minutes earlier when better placed and more time, he hit a terrible ball - which doesn’t get shown.

I do feel I’m right with my match rating (7/10), he was good in places, but wasteful in others, which of course they don’t show during analysis.

He also dithered in their offside goal, but it was offside so didn’t matter.

We lost vs Bolton I think, Ward was recovering from a virus.

We were switching from a back 3 in possession to a back 4 out of possession. Veltman was the +1 and player his role quite conservatively because, I suspect, he does not have the pace to get back into position like a Kyle Walker would be able to do.
