Agreed! Also one of the youngest players on the pitch, only 18 (only Ferguson and Turns are younger). Plus for what its worth its noticeable that given Karbo can play both sides, it sort of suggests that the club feel Furlong is a bigger talent than the other fullbacks at u23 level i.e. Yapi and Tanimowo

I'd have thought that Cochrane was higher up in the pecking order

There isn't much coming off the production line down there by The Solent these days, by the look of that. However good your facilities and scouting are, if the talent's not there, it's not there. West Ham have had periods where they've produced fantastic groups (Ferdinand and Lampard, Cole, Defoe and Carrick) but also some very lean years. Our recruitment department has unearthed a few gems on today's evidence, but we've had to pay quite a lot for one or two of them.

Of course, it also helps if, when you DO have the talent, you recognise it - Ben White was released by them during his U-16 schoolboy season, and we immediately invited him for a trial.

Very true!

True, will be interesting to see what happens to him next season (contract out at end of this season).

u23 Players out of contract at end of season (source: transfermarkt) -

Cochrane
Richards
Kazukolovas
McGill
Gwargis
Cashman
Desbois
Tanimowo
Wilson
Packham

Wouldn't be surprised the see the majority of these go given the 18 year olds coming up from the u18s next season (Everett, Peupion, Offiah, Talley, Miller), and in all likelihood some of the younger ones being more involved next season also (Moran, Ifill, Sturge, Emmerson).

Out of those I'd definitely want to hang on to Cochrane, Richards, Cashman and Tanimowo - and maybe Kazukolovas, as he's lost a lot of time to injury, so another season to see if he's good enough would be useful.
Of the rest, if we haven't got options to extend their contracts (and thus generate some transfer money), are they of an age where compensation has to be paid by teams that take them on? After all, the development squad needs to generate some income, as well as progress the best youngster into our first team.

I think we would have to offer them a contract then they turn us down for us to get any compensation.

Maybe McGill too - depends what happens to Walton. I can't see us getting rid of both

Agree with your selection. Wonder how many players will end up at USG next season (either on loan or permanently).

Fair point. I can really see Walton leaving us in the summer - it seems like he's been with us forever, out on loan season after season without ever getting a sniff of first team action with us.

What position does Cashman play. Watched some of game yesterday . Thought he was a CF but looked bit small for that role
