Wonderful news about Pascal Gross’ awards - my favourite Brighton player of all time. Here’s to many more.

The rumours about Gross have been around since last summer. I had heard from a pretty good source (and shared on here at the time) he wanted to go back to Germany - primarily I believe his child is nearly at school age and he wants them to go to a German speaking school rather than have to start learning just English then switch to German in a year or 2 anyway.

Being in England will not be a hindrance to learning German especially with at least one German parent. It will not hinder him switching to a German school either in my opinion.

I know plenty of kids with mixed nationality parents who are pretty much fluent in both their parent’s tongues, sometimes 3 languages if neither are native English speakers, who have moved around and settled in Germany at all ages.

Remember that period towards the end of Potter when Gross wasn’t a regular starter? What a pro he is - keeps getting better.
If he had any pace at all, he’d be going for Ballon d’Or!!

This is all totally true. But I still worry that if Mrs Gross wants to move to Germany then it could happen. I feel like if he decided he wanted to move back the club wouldn’t stand in his way given his service. But I hope we persuade him to give us another year.

I've heard this is why Gross accepted the 2 year deal last summer. Would take the family up to the child having to start at an English school in September 2025 (although I believe they don't start until 6 years old in Germany).

Unless he gets a too good to be true deal offered in German this summer then I think he'll see out that final year of his contract here before returning home. It will be a sad day when he's no longer pulling on our shirt, but you can understand his reasons and he'll go with everyone's best wishes.

I really think they set the bar of end of season montages too high in the Hughton era. That just seemed a bit pants to me, some of the most exciting home and away matches in our history and they barely did it justice.

Gross thoroughly deserved the award though, well done Pascal

He does want to go back - maybe to Bundesliga as a player or even a coach. It’s very likely Gross’s kids will already speak conversational German though because their Granddad comes over from Germany for a few days, to support Pascal in every home game.

My brother and sister-in-law lived in Germany for several years when my nephew was 3 and he came back speaking fluent German without being taught it. He obviously could already speak English which they kept up at home. The funny thing was whenever he started speaking German, he would shout it out and sound ‘cross’ maybe there was something he heard phonetically in the way German is spoken or the mannerisms of the German kids around him at Kindergarten. The learning of other subjects is made harder for those where the language of study is not the first language which is why my Brother brought my nephew back to the UK when he reached junior school age but at kindergarten/infant stage (where ‘learning is mostly visual and conversational) that’s not really an issue - in fact, speaking from my own experience in France as a kid, younger kids learn more vocabulary and colloquial conversation in 3 weeks with native speaking kids than they do in 3 years by being taught the language at school)

Hopefully he will see out his contract with us - clearly he feels he can still learn from RDZ (if RDZ is staying?) and he obviously is incredibly pleased having realised his dreams of playing for his Country which I think has been made possible by his improvement under RDZ too..

Huge congratulations to Pascal. He's been brilliant this season and has been consistently one of our top performers for the last 3 seasons. What he decides is best for his family and his kids schooling is an individual parenting decision and I don't think it's a relevant discussion to be having here.

Think we can say though, I hope he stays at least one more season. He isn't the sort of player you can just go out and replace

I would imagine Mitoma has gone back to Japan as there is no prospect of him playing before pre season. Personally I see the point of us having Category A facilities as a reason foreign players would stay here while injured to get their rehab done as quickly as they can, but the world doesn't seem to work like that now.

I'm sure I saw Mitoma there watching on Sunday, just behind the bench with some of the other injured players - Lallana, Hinshelwood etc.

Be interesting to see if he does the same for our last two home matches.

As he has a back problem, it could just be something as simple as being advised not to attend as sitting on those conference chairs for three hours is not going to help his recovery.
