The standard that young players need to be to get a game is very different now compared to when we were milling about in the lower leagues

We need a Jedi in the team.

Dunk is the only player there that equates to this kid.

Dunk spends most of his time out of the first team these days.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Saints have been playing Shaw and Ward-Prowse quite a bit this season who didn't play that much in the Champo. I think young players will be offered more of an opportunity to play if deemed good enough as pressure is off if we get to the Prem. Gus wants us in the Prem, most of us do, and the best way to ensure as much consistency as possible, he's playing experienced players who are producing...given we are in the play offs at the moment.

Development squad has seen Barker, Forster-Caskey and Agdestein play for the first team in recent seasons, as well as Kasim, Rodgers and Sampayo. It's unfair to suggest none of our development squad are being developed, considering quite a few of our youngsters are out on loan at teams in the football league, which hasn't happened for a while. The experience of being on the bench/maybe getting a few games is going to be very helpful in the long run.

Just my opinion, like.

Do we have the quality of youngster to enable us to push for the top flight?

I wholly understand what your saying, but at some stage the current players playing in our first team were giving an opportunity.

Probably all of them were not giving this opportunity based on them offering their team 'a push' for anything, probably not even an improvement to that team, but they were given an opportunity based on their potential and maybe a policy or indeed circumstance, but it made them what we are seeing today, it really is key.

I accept that our current scenario does not lend itself to such acts of benevolence, but all of our current players had at some critical point in their careers an opportunity, based on someone wishing to advance their development even at risk of their teams progress.

This isnt necessarily a comment on BHA or Poyet, but a more general view on how youngsters do need a pathway to achieve a career in the professional game.

Slowing building up a repertoire of young talent for our new academy next year. Let's hope some of them make it.

I think the problem over the last 2 seasons is that we have always had something to play for maybe if we were promoted to the premiership and we were ticking along in mid-table Poyet would be prepared to take more risks with young players. There is something special about players that come through the ranks, its a bit like growing your own vegetables, they are not neccessarily better they just taste better.
