Our recent record with non-league signings doesn't seem to have been that impressive...

McFaul - sank without trace
Dixon - didn't even bother to sink - just without trace
Holroyd - pardon?

Anyone else?

But
Players from a non-league background = Noone (Burscough), Barnes (Paulton), Murray (Workington).

And in older times = Peter Ward (Burton Albion)

Remember the name ............. Mike Gosney!

if he is actually having a trial at millwall this week why are we headlining the article?

odd

shan't bother getting excited

Given the fact that Gary Hart was the last decent non league player we signed, I'll not be getting excited even if we do sign him. We are abject at spotting non league talent.

Alex Revell, scored a decent amount of goals, including a L1 hat-trick, and was sold on for a substanial profit.

But anyway, carry on...

How many non league players have we signed under the current set up?

1. Holroyd - rubbish
2. Barnes (playing for Eastbourne) - good

50% strike rate is not that bad.

:)

Anyway, whatever we WERE like at 'spotting talent' in the past, is basically irrelevant. We have an entirely new scouting system now. Give them a chance.

There is talent out there. Peterborough signed Mikail-Smith, Boyd and McLean from non-league. Perhaps they shouldn't have bothered either?

Had been at Cambridge before that though when they were a league club so hardly an uproven non league player, but carry on

I'm talking about the Albion's record, other teams seem to be somewhat better at it, which was basically my point

There was me thinking we signed Barnes from Plymouth. I'm not willing to say Holroyd is rubbish but he's not making any real impact and if we go up he's not really likely too.

Maybe I'm alone in thinking we're quite shit at getting in non league players that actually make it

Er no. You said "I'll not be getting excited even if we do sign him. We are abject at spotting non league talent. "

'ARE' i.e. current tense.

We are no longer that club. The entire scouting and player development set-up has been completely replaced. Give the new set-up a chance - see what they can unearth.

We did sign him from Plymouth, of course, but we spotted him in non league.

Don't worry, I'll say it, Holroyd was a dud, and we've signed quite a few of them from non league. But under different set ups in the past. Its hard to imagine that it is something intrinsic in Brighton that they can't sign anyone good if they happen to be playing non league football.

When we unearth one I'll happily concede, until then I'll remain unenthusiastic about ones for the future signed from non league clubs with no league experience.

I think you'll find none other than Football Genius himself was plucked from non-league Bognor.

Of course it's a gamble, and many don't make the step-up, but it's worth doing for the occasional success. Players like CMS show that there is the talent out there, you just need to pick the right one and develop him in teh right way.
