Reads like a bitter anti Labour, anti net zero rant from a man who talks about money ruining the game but also wanted Newcastle to be able to spend what they wanted because they could.

I gave up on the populist bilge after the first column but I certainly got the gist.
If you had kept reading you would have seen how the government have reneged on their side of the deal and basically said F*** the Albion . And there was was absolutely no mention of Newcastle in that piece , so no relevance .

The govt haven't reneged on any part of the 'deal ' as there wasn't a 'deal' between them.

Public transport has been a matter for private companies since the 90s. Add to that the way in which train drivers were treated in the early 2010s with govt backing, it's had an impact.

Clearly this has been written in conjunction with input from the club. If so, the anti football regulator stance and digs at people who are actually long term supporters of the club (bassam and chris ward) may be seen in time as a pr mis step.

An article that contains so many glaring factual errors in it surely couldn't have been written with the club's collaboration??

We subsidise rail and bus on every ticket , this was along with the condition of using public transport on match days that was our side of the agreement for the stadium , theirs was to provide the transport , whether that is down to government or local government i don`t give a shit - they didn`t keep their side .

Did you read his reply? Public transport is currently privately run. It’s not down to national or local governments.

Recently saw a club missive that said something along the lines of actively promoting sustainable forms of transport was a 'historic planning requirement'. Which reads pretty much as 'trains are nothing to do with us guv '

*edit* apologies in advance for triggering the chaileybot on a public holiday 😀

Personally I'm not a fan of home games on Boxing Day. Not sure what the big deal is.

Same here.

And there’s always an immense of moaning about them, home or away. Most people who like football (in this neck of the woods), once a year prefer family time.

Yep, same here. No understanding that public transport workers, stewards, catering staff etc. might want a Christmas break. I guess his defence of football fans didn't get on to the Leicester fans who had to travel over 100 miles home after 10 o'clock that evening. Television money insists that football takes place on Boxing Day to the detriment of match going fans. If he cared, he'd be arguing for some kind of winter break in the professional game. Boxing day football could be about going to watch your local non-league side: short travelling distances and sensible kick off times: See a match, see your friends and get home in time to see whichever of your nan/kids/spouse/cat who didn't come with you.

'No! I demand professional football on this date because it has always been so!'

'Sorry Martin, Don't you want to spend the day with your family and friends?'

'I'm a Fleet Street hack.'

'I'm sorry that was insensitive of me.'

He relishes in taking a dig at Prescott, although it wasn't Prescott, but Hazel Blears who made the final planning decision and he blames central government for planning requirements made by local government. Shoddy. Unresearched. Reactionary. Stick to 'What's going wrong at Man Utd?' David Conn you ain't.
if you work in the public service industry one of the downfall is you have to work on public holidays, I had to work Christmas Day and Boxing Day, Boxing Day was always the best day of the season to go and watch football, Always attracted a bumper crowd , and normally a local team would be the opponents,
who wants to go and watch your local non league team on Box Day, what’s a winter break got to do with playing football on Boxing Day
The planning authorities demanded the ground must be accessed mainly by public transport, but they failed to tell the transport companies to provide such a service , and indeed on normal match days service is indeed very poor . That’s is where the problem is

I'm not disagreeing on the failure of the rail companies but that isnt boxing day specific. Bus company has in my view been more than doing their bit.
