I thought when I posted that someone would pick me up on Ramsay and his stars and I agree, you dont get them easily but and its only my opinion, if i am going to spend a lot of money on eating out and its a real treat then i would prefer to go to a top restaurant and have the chef actually cook it or someone under his/hers direct guidance in a one off restaurant.
Cooks like Ramsay have multiple establishments and its very expensive, it does not help that i cannot stand the man and he is never off the TV.
I have been meaning for many years to go to Raymond Blancs Le Maison in Oxfordshire for a weekend, chuffing expensive but apparently worth every penny.
I think that real chefs are either cooking or teaching and not telling everyone to F off or cooking wearing nothing but a willy warmer.

As an example there is a restaurant not far from me on The Rame Penninsula called The View, extended from an old tea hut the chef, Matt Corner, who is from Sussex, is classically trained and does all the cooking at reasonable prices and it is great, there are many chefs around the country who are trained by Chefs like Roux that turn out the most delicious food.
I'm sure many on here have been to similar places.

I went to the Royal Hospital Road Place a few years ago when Claire Smyth was the chef and it was fantastic. I don't look at the Ramsay name over the door, just who is doing the cooking. Same with Jason Atherton running Maze. I don't know how much cooking Ramsay does anywhere now but his business does provide the financial support for some top quality places.

Any fine dining foodies would surely know Ramsay isn't the chef. I admit I like to go to restaurants to try the food of particular chefs but never thought Ramsay cooked in one to try....

I agree with all that, as much as I dont like him it does not mean the food is not going to be tip top, he must have some excellent chefs in his restaurants.
His $100 burger in Vegas does not help him much in my eyes though.
I went to Rick Steins a few years ago, he was not there ( rarely is) but the food was extremely good, but as eating out at a really top restaurant is now a rare treat (we used to do it 3 times a year) i would always want to go to a restaurant owned by a world class chef who does the cooking.
Having said all that I once went to The Fat Duck at the height of Hestons popularity, maybe I chose poorly but it was very dissapointing.
The Waterside Inn on the other hand.

THe Waterside Inn is up there amongst the best eateries in Shoreham!

We had a weekend in London after we got married and stayed in Claridges, as you do. But elected to dine at Petrus ( Marcus Wareing)

Not being a fan of GR I'd recently found out he'd had a massive bust up with MW and they'd gone their seperate ways. PEtrus it was. A mighty fine evening of food and drink. In fact we've already planned to go back with my best man and his partner as soon as its safe to do so.

I wouldn't let James Martin peel my potato's.

I wonder if anyones done Chef top trumps . . . . KEith Floyd would be the one to have!

Depends on the categories. Floyd would be your banker for ground breaking and alcohol consumption.

If you want to rank them on shit knife skills and desire to kick up the jacksy then you need to be holding Nigella and Ainsley in that order.

I once had breakfast next to Keith Floyd and Erik Thorsvedt (don't ask) and he was pissed out of his box at about 9.30 (KF that is, not ET)

I wouldn't let him boil me an egg

I know your comment is in jest but yep it really is - in some cases the chef’s will have trained for c17-20 years to get to that standard and most of the learning is in the filleting. Boggles the mind.

semi jest, I know . . . picking a decent piece of fish helps too. not from a bag in Iceland!

Ramsey was once asked who cooks in his flagship restaurant when he’s not in the kitchen. “the same people who cook when I am in the kitchen” was his reply.
