Hard right was MUCH more mainstream in the mid and late 70s. There were runours of a police state. 'They are coming over here, going on the dole and taking our jobs'. Common mantra back then, mad though it sounds. Especially in areas and by people who had never seen or spoken to a black person in the flesh. Like in Hove.
it may or not have been like that in the 70s , i tend to find the opposite these days , people in areas like hove whos lives arent reall touched by immigration or dont have much interaction with immigrants tend to expound the wonders of multiculturalism and immigration

Completely incompetent officers, finding every obstacle under the sun to delay developments, allied with councillors playing the vote chasing game in siding with nimbies. I’m not talking about building on downland, but city sites such as knocking down old empty factories which are next to existing housing.

A duo of smug, self righteous BBC Radio5 presenters the other week, commented that they now squirm at the racism in Faulty Towers.
Bloody hell, if they get their way, we'll become the most ridiculously over sensitive nation on earth.
Faulty Towers parodied a (white) English snob. Side stories did not set out to denegrade the sub-race of Catalonians, Germans, Americans, an Irishman, old ladies, Africans. They were amusing asides, with the joke invariably on the lunacy of the snob and his chaotic operation.

The BBC have often cut Major Gowen's lines about the Indians and West Indians playing cricket with Cleese's consent - but purely on the basis of televising it at a family friendly time. I'm pretty sure the intent of the show was to denigrate the type of person who would say such things, but there is no denying the language involved is absolutely and unashamedly racist for that reason. There was nothing faulty about it though.

As for multiculturism....not sure what that means. To me it means having access to multi cultures, with the freedom to reject all culture (and watch channel 5) if I want. I think that is something still allowed. To me it does not mean having to fast during ramadan, and not wish muslim colleagues 'happy Christmas' which I do, with no ill effect. My life and interactions are all smooth, PC-free, and uncluttered. And

It's a shame that some people think that if you don't find racism funny, be it casual or more deliberate that you are automatically a "bitty sucking cuck with thin skin and snowflake attributes".
