For those, like me, in search of the back story...

'The link between Ajax and Bob Marley was forged in 2008 during an otherwise unremarkable friendly against Cardiff at Ninian Park which ended 0-0. Cardiff’s stadium announcer Ali Yassine stuck the song on after the game and Ajax’s travelling supporters lapped it up, before adopting it as a club anthem upon their return to Amsterdam.

Marley’s son Ky-Mani caught wind of the phenomenon and has performed the song twice at the Johan Cruyff Arena, first in 2012 and again in 2018 during a Champions League game against AEK Athens that Ajax went on to win 3-0.

“My father was a big football fan, and football and the music went hand in hand,” Ky-Mani explained. “Being able to perform the song there, to feel the energy and the vibration there that day did something to me I’ll never forget. Ajax, that’s my team. From now until the day my number is gone.”

Marley’s daughter Cedella said: “I am beyond touched that Ajax has taken Three Little Birds and made it their anthem. Stories like this warm my heart and show how impactful songs like Three Little Birds can be. Soccer was everything to my father…and to use his words ‘football is freedom’”

Went to see Bob at the Brighton Centre. Anyone else there?

I was there - one of his last UK gigs (one of his last gigs anywhere I think)

The one I'd like to have seen was in December 1973, he and the original Wailers played Sussex University. I'd have been up for it but I was going on an 'educational' cruise the next day and was getting up at stupid o'clock.

Bob, Peter and Bunny together!

I think they cancelled that tour later, complaining about the cold

There must have been. I'd imagine he'd have cancelled if you were the only one there.

I thought everyone left - Exodus :)

Anyone else of the opinion that SKINT was the absolute highpoint of Albion sponsors and shirts and message? It was just a PERFICK synchronicity. Everything after that just seems to fall a bit flat

I'm sure its mutual.

I can turn in a reasonably respectable Hotel California on the karaoke, if I'm not too far gone. I reckon I'd get a ripple of polite applause from Bob and at least some of his Wailers, had they happened upon one of my performances.
