Yes, but if we swapped the points for our 2016/17 season we’d be even better off

Is there some sort of rule against this, in which case why don’t we just do it?

Reasons for our dreadful goals against record are the tactics we play
Reasons for our lack of wins are the tactics we play
Reasons for our poor Goal Difference are the tactics we play
Reason for the tactics we play, is GP, who has been brought in to play those tactics, but who can’t get the players who can play them effectively

Bit like Sammy Hyppia, who tried to play expansive football but with the crappy players he had inherited

The difference with Sam mark 1, and Sam mark 2, is that the mark 2 version has had time to assemble a squad, although with relatively low funding

The beauty of NSC. I think that I disagree with every single point you have made

My Albion mojo is much higher than it has any right to be I accept though. Our tactics were 100% based on not losing and hoping for something on the break in our first two seasons. Our tactics now are based on competing at this level and trying to win every game we play, big thumbs up from me.

Aston Villa were doomed and 7 points adrift of safety not long before the end of last season. We are not anywhere near half way through this season and some would have us relegated already. I think quite a few NSCers have a substantial amount of French blood :lolol:

These aren't the players you're looking for.

I've not done this for a few games, primarily because the result isn't particularly cheery.

Anyway, here's how the 2020/21 campaign stacks up against Albion's prior Premier League seasons at the same stage.

(Green = best, red = worst)

I'm sorry but this tells us nothing other than how many games we've played.

Without comparing like for like it's useless.

I've had a look at each of the games we've played this season and compared the results with the corresponding game from last season. I've left out the promoted teams, leaving 12 results.

This season 10 points
Last season 5 points

This season 15 goals for
Last season 6 goals for

This season 21 goals against
Last season 17 goals against

We are far better off in terms of both points and goals scored. And the one area we are worse off, goals conceded, the manager has taken decisive action.

The most worrying stat of all is that we have played WBA,Sheffield Utd & Burnley at home and have not won any of those games

And ultimately it will be our home form that will keep us up

The odd good result on the road won't be enough

At the end of my tether
A poor comparison...we seem to be going backwards. We concede too many, should we re sign Bong, bring home Duffy and tell Bruno to get his boots on? Obviously not but the number of games played are enough to see we have a problem. Since it seems our manager is staying, let’s hope he can change things for the better.... starting today? Let’s hope.

Villa only stayed up due to goal line technology failing.

If you split the results against the current top and bottom halves of the table you get
Top 10 P8 F10 A19 Pts 4
Bottom 10 P6 F6 A3 Pts 8 (no defeats!)

Strikes me that we can defend OK against the poorer teams but can’t score more than one goal a game against them. We need to score more goals against these team if we want to make any progress and turn draws into wins.
We are good enough scoring against top 10 sides to get an occasional draw or win because the play appears to be more expansive.

Last season we took six points off Arsenal and Norwich. I can’t see us taking six points off Villa, but maybe Newcastle?

Am I right in thinking that we’ve scored a combined 2 goals against Sheff Utd, Fulham, West Brom and Burnley? It’s our complete incompetence in front of goal that’s derailing our season, on the whole the defence are doing their part but unless they concede less one or less per game we’re not going to win.

This season there seems to be a more even spread.... The top teams are being beaten more often. Liverpool for example dropped 15 points in the whole season (38 games) whereas they have already dropped 11 this season after only 14 games. We are not doomed but it would be nice to start winning games. Had us down to beat Arsenal but their 3-1 win against Chelsea will give them a bit more confidence. Fingers crossed we can score today !!!

Complete incompetence in front of goal is a little harsh We are creating chances
Just not converting them At some point this will click into place
Even the corners , set pieces Both Dunk and Webster have spurned
Opportunities that should at least hit the target It’s frustrating Yes ,
But as Micky Adams used to say Keep the Faith

Best look at the tracker thread for this season.

16 points is the benchmark at the halfway stage on the path to a 40 point finish.

ie. This season, in theory, has a much trickier 1st half than 2nd half.

Is the right answer. I think. I hope.

This.

I don't mind the forum owner triggering a bit of click bait, indeed I expect and encourage it (expensive business keeping a forum going ) but, blimey.....

Anyway, it worked, as I have already posted 3 times on this thread:laugh::shootself

Tracker
2017-18 - +1
2018-19 - +4 (thread wasn't updated after 14 games, so link goes to the 15th game)
2019-20 - 0 (ditto)
2020-21 - -2

Forgive me if I’ve missed something, but it looks as though you’ve confirmed what I was saying.

Ignore all the past comparisons. They serve no purpose in trying to stay up. Only games that count now are future games starting today.

Sheff United have deserved a lot more than the 2 points they currently have but the fact is . They have collected only 2 points to date and no bleating or whinging is gonna alter that.

The remainder of the season starts today and points are the only thing that matters in the quest for survival.

Today is the day that every shot on target ends up in the West Ham net. You heard it here first
