Yeah the most popular sport in the world is embarrassing. If you don't like it, you could always f*** off from a football message board?

Hey, Mara-cheat punched a goal that sent England out of a WC.

Yes it's an embarrassing sport at times.

Plenty of youtube videos of players diving when no contact was made to them or cheating to get a penalty or free kick. That kind of shit lets the sport down badly.

Popularity means nothing to me.

For 20 years I spent trying to convince my mates soccer was a good game to follow. Every time they'd watch it though they'd see some guy get small tap or bump and end up rolling around on the ground like he'd had his leg broken only to be up and running around fine 1 minute later.

I love the Albion, doesn't mean I like the other soft as shit aspects of the game around the world.

that is a very valid statement in this instance.......as a fan of afl(sydney swans) and a football lover(our beloved ALBION)i can say that the rules of afl are simple and complex all at once..........chances are if you think afl is utter gash then you have no understanding of the rules , which is understandable cos it has taken me over 10 years of watching it to come to grips with them , understandably i suppose.:dunce:

Big game this week mate! Your mob vs my mob!

I'm taking your mob for $20 under 39.5 points!

Fair enough, maybe I havent. How come it has never caught on anywhere else?

Please bear in mind I am no lover of Rugby League either for much of the same reasons I dont like AFL.

I can't stand rugby league for the reasons you state about AFL although to be fair i di go to a game with someone who knoews what it is all about and there is more to it than i thought. Same with AFL i guess.

Why is it not popular anywhere else? don't know, maybe everywhere else has enough games to concentrate on. Maybe no-one has made enough effort to export it. There was talk about taking it to South Africa but not sure what came of that. I think it is played a little in other countries (mainly by expat Aussies).

Any way i have just watched a fantastic game and am off to be happy, dreaming of another tilt at the flag for the Cats (and yes i know it is very unlikely).

Goodsey is a machine. If he'd taken up any other sport bar AFL he'd probably have been an Olympian.

used to bump into him often in the supermarket in eastlakes in sydney........he's a top boy. beefed up a lot recently..!! fancy the swans this year, i hate the f***ing eagles ......caaants.

I'm a massive AFL fan, and a huge Hawks fan. Geelong have been our bogey side for years. A lot of Aussies hate the Cats, because they are big spending and always seem to try buy their way to the League!

Nah mate, as much as I don't like the team of my town they have recruited incredibly well over the years rather than buying players in. Your beloved hawks have spent more on bringing players in like Burgoyne, Hale, Gunston etc than the Cats have.

Actually I think I might of mistaken them for Collingwood, my mistake. But for you saying Hawks spent more, we got rid of a lot of deadwood in the squad. Because in the early 00's we were Wooden Spoonists!

Fun game to play but I hated watching it, its like watching teams play hoofball but for 2 hours, also giving teams a point if they miss the target....

For anyone that has a remote interest, there is a local team (the Sussex Swans), who have a semi-final tomorrow in the British Southern League.

Let's not forget to point out that staging (diving) and looking for the free kick is becoming a big part of AFL

Most of the cats team have been recruited young and brought through the ranks, We have number one drafts picks and have done it all without bottomming out. Not to mention managing to keep hold of player who could have gone elsewhere and earned hug salaries. They agreed a few years ago to keep salaries low in order to keep the team together.

As for most of Australia hating us I am not sure you are right their, most fans i speak to including my Hawks supporting brother in law mates have at the very least a grudging respect for the way the club has put this run together over the last few year.

The AFL fortunately considers it a bane on the game and has introduced laws which allow players to be charged for staging.

The difference is that in soccer a player staging can have a far bigger influence on the game due to the low scores and ability for players to be sent off.

Geelong's not got any number one draft picks in it's team mate!

They did it all with great picks around the 7-15 mark.

and how are those laws going, I still see Steve Johnson staging on a regular basis? (I only watch the cats so can't comment on other players).

The principle is still the same. You attack one sport for diving and defend one for staging, there is no consistency.

I'm not defending it. Stevie J is a cheating dog at times. He can flat out play but when he stages he brings the game into disrepute.

I've been to a hell of a lot of games and the crowd goes ape shit when a player gets a free for staging.

One thing the AFL have is a strong administration. As soon as it started happening that a few players were looking to cheat the system, they acted upon it.
