Well this hasn't gone well. I was hoping for a genuine discussion with views on both sides of the argument, but instead got the likes of Stat Brother and Mustafa's bollux. I expected better. Oh well.

Then perhaps you shouldn't have started with a load of lies that you'll never back away from.

Webster on a par with Duffy at carrying the ball out - come on.
He only been dribbled past twice this season.
He's 36 accurate long passes to his name.
Over 500 accurate tippy tappy ones.
Nobody is scoring goals this season but he has 3 to his name from last.

This thread wouldn't exist if the team had beaten Southampton, and you want to be taken seriously.

Didn’t get past the third line. If you think he can’t bring the ball out better than Duffy then it’s really not worth a discussion.

So put your keyboard where your mouth is and tell me what exactly does Webster bring to the team?

This is not the time to be digging out our players.

How do some dimwits not see it’s our attacking that’s the problem?

0 goals vs Burnley
1 goal vs West Brom
1 vs Palace
2 vs Manchester United (I include this because we should have scored 10 that day)

If you struggle to score 1 goal a game, you’ll find it very difficult to win games in this league. Our shots against/chances given to the opposition are very low, yet somehow it’s our defenders faults? ???

That's better. But opinions aren't lies. I could have started this thread after several matches this season. I haven't made a study of his stats, I made observations on why he makes me nervous which coincidentally matched his BBC stats from Southampton. I don't need to be taken seriously on NSC any more than you do. But I was hoping for a better class of debate.

There is no need to dig out individual players.

I was going to add an explanation, but that would require my engaging with a load of bollocks that isn't appropriate now, like scapegoating.

But if you insist then: Ahem. Potter OUT!!!

Although that is not my wish. Not at all.

There - discussion! Fill your boots.

Unfortunately the stats completely counter what you say. It sounds like you have become fixated on a few errors he has made (like every player does) and have just ignored everything else he does.

You may be right. As I said at the outset, I may be thinking like many others did who failed to spot the attributes of Barnes and Stephens. I was hoping for a debate about it, but I may have set my standards too high. Hopefully Webster will prove me wrong.

Then once again I suggest next time your opening gambit isn't so outrageously wrong as dismissing his ball carrying ability by comparing it to (my hero) Duffy.

A player who I've been signing his praises all week for his dead ball defending, but would never be so bold as to suggest he could take more than 2 paces with the ball at his feet.

Include stats rather than just your prejudged, prejudiced, anti-Webster pro-Duffy view then ? The debate took the route you started it on.......

You know it’s perfectly possible to think neither Duffy nor Webster are the answer to get us out of our usual bottom 5 ceiling, maybe just like Hughton and Potter. It’s not a choice of two, you don’t by law have to pick one - there’s a world of other options out there

I think he's good enough for us. I reckon overall he's been better than Dunk this season.

That said £20M now seems a bit pricey, particularly when Veltman was £1M (if any of the transfer fees are true).

Veltman's terrific, until he does something wrong.

Duffy is a magnificent defender but sadly and by his own admission he struggles in a back three system.
Webster has all the attributes of being able to play in a back three.
Webster has the stamina, tactical discipline and awareness, ball playing ability and tackling.
Tactical discipline and awareness are key ingredients of a defender who plays in a back three but also often goes unnoticed but is critical.
Webster fits the criteria for the new breed of defender perfectly in my opinion.
