He was stupid and broke the law, but can't help feeling there are more deserving in this world to be locked away.

Only slightly less than McCormick the drink driver who killed two children and the same as Lee Hughes who killed someone drink driving. Staggering, not defending Johnson just to clarify, he deserved a sentence but this seems absolutely ridiculous to me IMO.

The whole thing is a mess. A little girl will grow up without her dad being there for her, a footballer's career is cut short, the victim is emotionally scarred, the taxpayer has to pick up the bill for a significant prison term, a great club is embarrassed. All because a young and very rich bloke in the public eye made an appalling error of judgement. I take no pleasure from the severity of the sentence at all but, my god, he had enough opportunities to call a halt to what was happening. And the law has to protect the potential victims of the future.

And people hear about it as well. Poor lambs.
The court of public opinion that starts long before any verdict is handed down always seems wrong to me (Ched Evans or even the Albion players being cases in point), but once the case has concluded...sympathy for the guilty dwindles somewhat.

I understand why some may think 6 years is harsh, probably because If he had done it in China he would have got nothing, but If he had done it in the USA he would have got 20+ years.
He did in in the UK and got 6. He was a millionaire footballer who could of had his pick of many girls. He picked a child.

It's wrong to conflate those two cases. One resulted in a guilty verdict (albeit one that is still being challenged), the other did not.
Unless he had Michael Jackson's lawyers and paid the girl not to give evidence, in which case we could all pretend he was innocent, while knowing deep down he's a kiddie fiddler.

I was drawing no comparisons between the two in terms of severity of offence or the verdict, more the rampant speculation that accompanied each case prior to their conclusions.
The Evans case especially was seemingly treated like some sort of soap opera by a section of the wider public. Horrible.

But Evans has mostly been treated that way since he was found guilty, which is not the same as the basing it on rampant speculation.

The count he was convicted on, was sexual touching - penetration with his fingers. So we do know for sure that he touched her.

Ched Evans decision put back to as soon as possible in April. What does this indicate good or bad news for him? I think bad as had it been good they would, I should have thought, given it immediately. to save more money if he sues for wrongful arrest.

Agreed, he has been. The initial post of mine you quoted did say (I hope) that it's this treatment happening prior to any verdict being handed down that makes me uncomfortable, not afterwards (though maybe it should).
Obviously there's now an appeal going on so that confuses the issue slightly with regards to him but, if there hadn't been (for the sake of trying to make my view clear), then I wouldn't be concerned at all with how he was being viewed/discussed/treated in the public eye.
