No one can predict improvement rates in sprinters but he would need to go at least 2 tenths faster to medal at the worlds or Olympics in ideal conditions. He could do it but impossible to predict if any athlete can take those last times off. Harry AA took the same title but he won't ever get anywhere near a major final one suspects. He is faster than the Jamaican Blake was at the same age and he will probably be favourite in London for the 100 m if Bolts hamstring carries on playing up.
I hope this applies to middle distance runners. My cousin is ranked 13th in the UK at 1500m running as an U20. I like the idea of flying to RIO in 4 years to cheer her on. :)

Harry A-A was highly ranked as a junior but never pushed on, did he? He just got ridiculously bulked up.

Harry Aikines-Aryeetey won the junior championship in 10.37 though (Gemili has run 9 faster times in the last 2 months). There is a whole world of difference. He also clearly got into his weight training priorities too much though.

Usain Bolt took a long long time to adapt to 100m as he had to change his whole running style to adapt from 200m.

Christophe Lemaitre the top european junior 100m ever improved from 10.04 to 9.92 since being a junior but he is suited to 200m more also.

This guy has only been training for 6 months, he is genuine. So far he is dealing with the pressure, but its only going to get worse, so interesting to see how it goes, things look good at the moment though. Running conditions simply won't match Barcelona so he will be happy for a semi. But Rio, a finalist is a realistic idea, injuries permitting, anything can happen in a final...

Be good if we had a sprinter who regularly ran under 10 seconds...

Even that these days may not get you in the final of the major events !

Sub 10 will 'always' make finals. Its not enough now though, to WIN them.

This year alone, Blake (9.75), Bolt (9.76), Powell (9.80), Gatlin (9.85), Bledman (9.85) and Gay (9.86) have all run under 9.90, and all bar Gay, have done so more than once.

Gemili's 10.05 yesterday makes him the 28th fastest in the world this year: iaaf.org - 2012 Toplists 100 m - o

The issue with that Link is it is the 28th fastest but most of them are set by the same people, so in terms of individuals where would he rank

No, hans kraay fan club was clever enough to take account of that. 28th fastest is correct.

Thank you.

It wasn't that hard to count them. They put each athlete's best time in BOLD, so you just count the BOLD ones...

For anyone interested in his rise to prominence, this site has the details of every race run by him and every other UK athlete at all age groups and at whatever levels. A young lad called Owin Sinclair has just become the fastest 14 year old in history and it will be interesting to see how he fairs in the coming years (10.92) He took that mantle from MLF.

Huge fan of this site, very well set out, I am still blown away by katrina johnson thompson, she is going to break a world record one day.

are we about to have a golden era in the stadium, I mean Gemili tipped to be a star by sprinters that are world record holders, we have Katarina up and coming, and we have Shakes-Drayton who destroyed the field last night in London

The talent is out there. It is so important though that schools sports is strong as the story with Gemili can be applied to other sports as well. In his case he won his school sports and then went to his district sports and from then on to the schools county champs. Qualifying standard for the Aviva English champs and away we go. He did not emerge originally through a club although of course now he has joined one.
It is not much different to how a good footballer comes through is it.
More emphasis on sports in schools please.
