El-Abd has improved massively under the tutelage of Gus. He wasn't technically gifted before and was a plodder more than anything. Now his reading of the game is second to none and is a much better player than Dunk, however Dunk is much better than AEA was at a similar stage in their career.

Completely this. I remember a game when AEA came on against Oldham as a sub at the Withdean in the 08/09 season and utterly stunk the place out. At that point I'd never would have expected him to be where he is right now. All credit to Adam el Abd. You work hard you get results

The magnitude of his improvement would be often regarded as the stuff of club legends. If he goes onto make another another 50-100 appearances for Brighton he should quite rightly be regarded as an Albion legend. And as a Brighton fan, there should be few better moment than seeing a local boy come REALLY good.

Hopefully Dunk will follow, he has even more natural ability.

Perhaps it was more Adam wasn't fit back in the day when he didn't show as much potential. His improvements while under Gus have also come at a time when our fitness and training regime has become far more professional in its undertaking.

The fitter you are the more you can achieve out on the pitch.

Having read back through the thread, one obvious thing has not been said. A few people at the start were very upset that a young player came unstuck against a lowly northern div 3 team. Their striker that day hasn't done badly for himself since then either and is now playing his trade in the premiership.

Sometimes a bad performance can be about coming up against a class opponent who is at the top of their game. I can recall some top performances against us by the likes of Jason Roberts, Trevor Sinclair and Dean Ashton, when they were all playing their trade in the lower leagues.

Lynch and Elphick and Virgo playing alongside him made loads of howlers or went AWOL.

He should get some songs today, like the "ma-na ma-na" tune.
The muppets version was famous - "Ad-am el-Abd" ought to raise the roof in respect for 300 games.

i was thinking of these old day and all the criticism he got, when i heard he'd reach 300 game. top bombing from him.

...Now his reading of the game is second to none

yes, and i dont think you teach that so much. i have always maintained that half his errors were when he covered for others, because he saw a danger others didn't, and was playing out of position to cover the threat or making a last man effort to break an attack. under Gus he's gained confidence and technical aspects to play at the same level as he could read the game.
