Hi, Just heard from my misses that there's been a really bad accident where a little boy has been knocked down in Chalky Road in Mile Oak.

Chalky Road is closed and you won't be able to access it for a couple of hours.

Thoughts go with the family of the little boy...:nono:

It's the third time a child has been knocked down at Chalky Road and the council sits back and does nothing...Shame on you:(

If it's the road I'm thinking of, doesn't it already have those islands that stick out that only let one vehicle through at a time? If there's measures there already, what more can the council do?

Hope the kid's OK.

You're right...The problem is, is that something needs to be done at Fox Way and Mile Oak Road entrances to Chaly Road to slow motorists down...the islands are just used by boy racers as chicanes and don't really help much.

Those islands just force you into a game of chicken. The number of times I've seen idiots hit the gas and "squeeze through" against oncoming traffic down there...

Not much the council can do when a kid runs out from behind a bus though is there?

No you're right, but you're completely missing my point about Chalky Road.

3 children have been knocked down now along Chalky Road and whilst you can't comment about the speed the driver was doing today, you can't get away from the fact that there are far too many accidents along Chalky Road (both with pedestrians involved and RTA's) than there should be and that's overly due to the fact that people are driving too fast when coming from Fox Way or Mile Oak Road.

I live at the top of Chalky road and I see it out of my front room window every day of the week and yet the police only ever do anything when there's been an accident along Fox Way.

Also, drivers SHOULD be alot more careful driving down there than they are at the moment...FFS there's a park and two schools close by - it doesn't take a genius to work out that a child could step out into the road.

First it was the Councils fault and now its the Police, make your mind up?!?

I'm not missing the point at all, I was commenting on this particular accident.

I agree that the speed people drive in Chalky road can be excessive and i've witnessed my fair share of tossers gunning it up and down at speed and dealt with them accordingly. But you can't realistically station a police car there 24/7 to deal with errant motorists at the expense of everything else that is happening in the city. Ultimately it's not the police's fault or the council's fault that people drive like twats and cause accidents it's the drivers themselves.

I can't win this argument anyway because if I stop motorists committing offences in chalky road i get accused of going for the easy soft targets and not dealing with real criminals etc etc blah blah blah why aren;t you out catching rapists and murderers or kids with knives etc etc blah blah blah, i'll go to the argus etc etc blah blah blah, you get the picture?

In answer to the other question, yes that is what appears to have happened.

General question - Who is responsible for setting or varying the speed limits on urban roads? Is it the Local Authority, County Council, Highways Agency or the Police?

doesn't look good :(

A YOUNG boy is fighting for his life after he was run over in the street.

The nine-year-old was airlifted to hospital in London after the accident in Chalky Road, Portslade, at about 10.30am today.

He is believed to have been getting off a number one bus outside Portslade Community College with his mother when the accident happened.

Both the Sussex Police and Ambulance Helicopter and the Sussex Air Ambulance landed in the college grounds to help treat the boy.

He was taken to Royal London Hospital for emergency treatment. His condition has been described as critical.

The road was closed while police investigated the collision.

Sussex Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact them on 0845 6070999 quoting Operation Southwood.

While obviously i hope the little boy is going to be ok and i dont argue that some people drive far to fast in small roads (i live in a small road and often hear/see the boy racers flying down here) but i cant help but wonder why the children that have been hit wernt more aware of safety on the roads it one of the basic safety things every parent should teach their child as early as possible, my son is 4 and wouldnt dream of stepping into the road until i tell him to it seems some parents dont think its an important thing to teach young children, like the ones you see who have a pushchair and cross between parked cars by shoving the pushchair out before they look - it baffles me

If this road is really that bad in terms of speeders, isn't it one place that it would actually make sense to put up a camera ? It sounds like over there that they often put them up in the places where they can make most money, and not necessarily the places they would do the most good.

Please don't take it personally it wasn't meant that way at all...I'm sorry if it came across that way.

The police and community support officers in Mile Oak do an excellent job and I'm not in anyway taking that away from them.

I also understand that the driver of the vehicle who hit the vehicle wasn't to blame...I feel as much for them as I do for the kids parents...He or she will have to live with that for the rest of their life...What happened today appears to have been a tragic accident.

My issue is that Chalky Road is becoming more and more dangerous because of idiots who drive recklessly. In the past, the police have had speed cameras up in the wrong places along Fox Way...They've concentrated on the traffic going toward the Benfield roundabout when they should be at the top of Chalky with their speed guns...If you speak to alot of the residents round here they'll say the same, but this should only be done as an interim measure while the council sort out a traffic calming scheme for the top and bottom of chalky road.

As I said, whilst today appears to have been a tragic accident the two other times over the last year were not...they were due to drivers speeding along Chalky Road during the school run - not because of children not respecting traffic...

The amount of times the little chavs from there run accross the road in front of cars is shocking.

If what has happened what I think has happened, then I feel sorry for the driver.

I believe people have been campaigning for a Zebra crossing for quite some time but I don't know if there's been any joy...I think it's time for my local tory councillor to start earning his money!

There is a zebra crossing about 20 meters away from the bus stop.
