absolutely blown away. how can this be routinely allowed, week in, week out, purely based on what badge the player is wearing??!!?

There is absolutely no evidence of bias. There is a lot of evidence the VAR is very interpretive and inconsistent. On this occasion it's hard to see how he wasn't sent off. It would be good for reports to be available on these decisions.

obviously there's no comprehensive evidence of bias, otherwise we'd hear of it. but there does come a point, after so many so many poor decisions, after so many decisions that would seemingly be guaranteed to be given the other way if a top six team was on the recieving end, that you do have to wonder

The whole point of VAR was to eradicate blatant errors/inconsistency, I think we all know if this match has been played at Anfield we would have been down to 10/9 men by the end .... which suggests both bias and inconsistency?

In real time I can kind of see why they missed the foul on MacAlister, the assistant should have seen it, and VAR doesn't have remit, it's a mistake but it's understandable.

The Fabinho challenge however is as much evidence of big team bias as you could ever wish to see. That tackle is just a red card in any language in any game of football in the world. That is a red card 30 or 40 years ago. It is a horror decision that a qualified official sat watching replays cannot give that. Something very very wrong.

I think it is an unconscious bias. I don't think officials are intentionally bias and they all make mistakes against all teams, however they know that decisions against the bigger sides come with a lot more scrutiny, worldwide attention and can be talked about for weeks after, in those moments they are more inclined to go with the big team than not.

I don’t usually climb off the fence but today was awful from the officials.

Handball for their goal, and it was an awful tackle from Fabinho. Instant red. Where on earth was VAR??

My chin hit the floor when Mitoma’s goal was allowed to stand. They were the only crumbs given to us all game.

agree with everything else but I think VAR does have remit for the Ali Mac one. if he gets to that ball he's one-on-one, if that's a foul, which I believe I was, then it's denial of an obvious goalscoring opportunity

at this stage refs are looking bent, bottling decisions and dont give clear fouls.

and VAR a farce, arbitary rules on when it can and cant apply, then attempts mm precision on offsides.

There have been analysis done on VAR decisions over the last couple of seasons. It shows there is no evidence of bias.

In 2020/21. ironically, It was Albion who benefited the most from VAR.

The officials need to be held to account, then something can be done about the appalling standards

like our politicians.

I don't think bias is an issue, incompetence and idiotic inconsistency that would get most people sectioned is the issue.

If a bus driver was that inconsistent he'd be the perfect employee Mon-FRi, clean his own bus then be in an institution on charges of mass murder for ploughing through the middle of Churchill Square at 11am Saturday morning

Tune in to SSN tomorrow to hear Dermot Gallagher explain how he can see why the referee and the VAR did that; on a good day he might go as far as insinuating it wasn't quite wrong enough to be wrong!

I’d love to see this. The reports I recall seeing only talk about when VAR is actually called upon.
As far as I know, today VAR was only used for Mitoma’s goal. Based on that, we benefitted today from VAR and Liverpool didn’t- is that something you can agree with after watching that game?

You'll see I always stick up for referees. The reason is that the game is never an exact science. It never will be. Howard Webb used to get grief all the time, but you don't referee a Champions League Final and a World Cup Final on a whim.

The fact is that refereeing will unlikely get better because it can't. They are humans and will always make mistakes in live time.

VAR is another matter. Today both of the contended decisions were not refereeing errors. The first was the linesman's call, the second the referee couldn't be sure of the point of contact and VAR should have made it a red.

RDZ said it was a sending off, but also said accidents happen (referring to the challenge). That's how I saw it. Not an intended piece of nastiness, easy to create uncertainty in the refs mind, something that VAR needs to explain to us why it upheld the on-field decision.
