Had Heseltine got the leadership when Major did, 1997 would have been a lot closer.

Speaking as a Labour man, Heseltine was my favourite Tory for many years.

The most curious thing..
Local radio was APOPLECTIC with rage this morning as all the scousers came out to refight a 30 year old battle (which they lost since up to the early 2000's Liverpool was still a wreck - its got a lot better over the last decade, despite the wasteland that still surrounds Stanley Park).

Immensely entertaining.

The actual documents are a fascinating read

Ironic that Liverpool will be upset after cabinet papers were released that they didn't ask for.

Presumably anything related to Hillsborough gets released in a few years anyway?

It is strange how (some) Liverpool fans get so uptight about Hillsborough yet go very quiet when Heysel is mentioned.

Who was in the Albion supporter's coach when it was bombarded with rocks going through Toxteth in 1983?

That was merely a knee-jerk response to the missionaries bringing civilization and christianity to the natives

About the biggest mistake the conservatives ever made in my view.

No great surprises then.

The Tories hated the poor, f*cked up massively over the Falklands (a war they could have avoided if they listened to the military) and were negotiating with the IRA behind the scenes but telling a different story publically.

Nothing new to report to be honest, pretty much everything has been documented since the 80s.

You can be wise with hindsight about any war, the war was unavoidable when argentina invaded as thats when it started. Nice try at distorting history. It was the US intelligence services that warned of imminent invasion, HM Forces didn't have a clue.

I suppose this will give the scousers something to wallow in and be bitter about for the next 30 years.

Oh right. Not sure anyone mentioned "imminent invasion", more suggesting what would probably happen is they took that line.

Any reductions would be interpreted by both the islanders and the Argentines as a reduction in our commitment to the islands and in our willingness to defend them.

The only people guilty of revisionism are those who don't consider it didn't need to happen and choose not to see that the Government at the time "eased" the likelihood of invasion.

The CIA was warning the UK up to 5 days beforehand, cant remember the source but may look it up. If the UK Military thought it was rubbish up to the point of invasion then how would they have been warning Maggie years beforehand. Nice conspiracy theory though. Maybe thatcher planned the war in the same way Bush planned 9/11. You are using the same arguments afterall.

Not sure anyone is suggesting the Tories planned it and there isn't a conspiracy theory. I'm not a conspiracy theorist at all, I tend to go for the cock up theory and cock up it defiantly was. Whether by the Government or the Military or collectively

Just read the official report. Point being that the actions of the Government towards the islands leading up the the conflict were somewhat incongruous with say Thatcher taking the military salute afterwards.

The media has changed significantly from the time. The Government would have been ripped apart today by the analysis of the lead up to the conflict alone.

Yes very good but you covieniantly overlooked prior to invasion that.

1. HMS Endurance was given a stay of execution to remain.
2 Argintinian scrapmerchants that had landed on South Georgia
3 Prior to the Invasion, Royal Marines and a couple of vessels where ordered to the Falklands.

If the scrapping of endurance caused the Argies to plan to invade then why was this not enough to stop them.
