As we are all but half way through and 40 points is the first priority and seeing as he has hardly be used , where and what teams would suit his style? Stephens has had his day time to look forward with someone thats not afraid to occasionally shoot . We played are arch rivals away in a tough game and he came through ok no worse than Stephens time for a run in the side .

Now i like Mooy, and really enjoyed this weeks game, but this isnt true, as the result was worse than last year with Stephens (and his killer pass to Knocky)

But we had no way of knowing that it would work out. (I mean he is clearly quite good, so it was likely) Players get injured, don't settle, don't fit into a system.

If we were that convinced it would work why did we do loan first and not just buy him outright? (terribly old fashioned I know)
Because Huddersfield wanted him back for next season if they'd got promoted.

Doubt that it will be anywhere near £20m. Most relegated PL sides are in deep economical shit after one season in the Championship. I think Huddersfield will be absolutely desperate to sell, maybe even in January. I dont think they would reject a bid around £10m at this point. Lets say he gets a long term injury in April or something.. it would probably a complete disaster to them. My bet he is joining us permanently in January for £8-12m with a bit of extra if he or Brighton do very well.

If Huddersfield were closer to promotion or if Mooy was two years younger I agree £20m would have been pretty likely but I believe we could do some great business here.

... feels pretty weird writing those numbers after a year of "Routledge is a hero saying no to his match appearance bonus so that Potter are allowed to use him".

Do I detect a shift of allegiances here Swansman ?

You're one of us now! :albion2:

I'm sure he has just as much faith as I do. But professionals in a professional world, agreeing to a new contract with Huddersfield as long as he got premier league football this season, wouldn't then jeopardise the chance of playing premier league football next season by switching clubs in January when he could just as easily wait and do it in the summer

A couple more wins this decade, putting us on 26 points, with 17 games to pick up c10 more points for survival might just concentrate his mind.

Agree with you. Not only are Huddersfield nowhere near getting back to the PL (and therefore back on the gravy train), he's nearly 30 and therefore has minimal resale value to us or any other suitor. He's a great player and I absolutely hope we're lining him up. But there is no way on earth Huddersfield are getting the twenty to thirty million some of them seem to think they are.

Mooy is unlikely to commit to Brighton until our survival is assured, would be foolish for him to switch in January and then end up back in the championship in August
Well that would mean signing next summer. Plenty of players sign for clubs in January when the team isn't guaranteed safety. It wouldn't show much faith in the manager and his teammates, or even himself, if he chose not to sign for fear of relegation.

Why didn't he sign last summer then? That seemed like someone keeping his options open. And then it follows, why rush into signing in January when he can do it in July? He seems happy and enjoying his football so there doesn't feel the need to change things from his point of view

Is that why Pardew on Sky at the Arsenal game said he would walk into virtually any team in The Premier?

Maybe Huddersfield were hoping to return to the PL and wanted to keep their options open? Or maybe we didn't want to commit to purchase at that time, given we had a new manager and didn't know which players would work best in his system yet? He could have been keeping his options open, but given he was under contract for a Championship team, I'd have thought he'd have wanted to sign for a PL team. And if he was keeping his options open, I'd think he's quite impressed with what he's seen at Brighton so far.

Perhaps Hudd wouldn’t allow that, hoping for an immediate return to the PL?

In the Australian press today his agent confirms that we have the option to buy Mooy at the end of the season.

As l understand it we do not have an option to buy. When the loan deal was agreed last summer, the plan was for Mooy to return to his parent club at the end of this season. He had just signed a new improved deal, and Huddersfield had plans for him.

With a surplus of midfield players, and the then manager favouring a more physical approach to get them promoted back to the Premier League, it was thought that they could do without him this season.

However things have changed drastically, the club has yet another new manager, and they have suffered a glut of long term injuries, (Tommy Elphick being just one of them), are langusihing towards the foot of the table, and are short of players.

To sign new players they need to raise funds, and of course Aaron Looy is their major asset. Let's put in a bid and see what happens. Surely he won't be playing fopr Huddersfield next season.

I’m sure there was something about this on here from somewhere before - I asked this a few weeks back. If we have the option, it’s purely up to us and as far as I know about these deals is that the fee is already agreed? That article suggests not. Otherwise what’s the point of an ‘option to buy’ - they could just say we want £500mil if they / he would rather go elsewhere?!

He only had one year left on his contract, so ball was very much in his court.

Indeed, we're all just speculating. This thread was mainly concerned with whether or not we should try and buy him in January, so I just thought I'd add some potential considerations from the players side.

Like the ball was in Dale Stephens' court when he wanted to go to Burnley and we said no? Presumably Huddersfield told him he could play for us in the PL for the year as long as he signed a new contract, and if not, he could stay with them in the Championship. Otherwise it wouldn't have made sense for him to sign a new contract.

That doesn't tell us whether Brighton offered to buy or not.

Yeah I'm not having a go at you, I just don't agree with your opinion.

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat

Oh a good point has been made on Twitter.

Mooy has already played for Huddersfield and the Albion this season so can't be transferred elsewhere, not unless he's prepared to sit out till August.

The Huddersfield chairman *apparently* said something in the local press about an already agreed price for Mooy's sale after the loan.

It seems in everyone's interest to get it done in January.

In the Australian press today his agent confirms that we have the option to buy Mooy at the end of the season.

It's as clear as mud. Graham Potter says there have been no talks, but the agent says there are.

The only fact seems to be Stat B who correctly says Mooy has already played for two teams this season, so nobody can nick him in January.
