I'd try Beckham at right back with Lennon at right midfield / wing. I think Beckham was more effective when he dropped back for the last 30 mins as it gave him more options to pass forward to Rooney, Lampard and Gerrard. It also gave Rio and Terry an easy pass to Beckham who could then pick out the runs of Lennon.

So my team for Sweden would be.....

Robinson

Beckham Rio Terry A. Cole

Lennon Carrick Lampard Downing

Rooney Owen

Give Crouch and Gerrard a rest, give Owen and Rooney a game together to get fit and sharp, and see how Beckham can play at right back.

If Beckham plays right back against a decent side he will be f***ed, against a side like Holland Robben will tear him apart

As a Leeds fan was devastated to see him leave, especially for only £1m. No one believed me when I said he had an outside chance of making the tournament.

He's great if you want a winger that will run at opponents and get crosses in as opposed to Beckham who will just pick out his crosses.

Heck of a difference in the quality of cross though !!!

The only way I would start Lennon is for Owen.

I do not want to go through another World cup/ Euros where we are carrying him again with all the pundits saying you cant drop him.

Why not?

Thank God someone realises that Owen isnt quite as brilliant as people make him out to be. 3 goals over the last two tournaments tell me that he's not indispensable to England, even if he should still start imo.

As I said before the game yesterday, England need someone on the right wing with pace.

It stretches the play and although Lennon's crossing isn't as accurate as Beckham's the defenders are lessed bunched and there's more space for and opening.

Either drop Beckham or move him into the middle and drop Lampard.

Sorry that is utter shite, agree that Lennon looks good but even thinking about dropping Beckham is absolute madness... he is the main source of our goals and without him we will struggle further.

I'd be tempted to play Lennon alongside Rooney

No Beckhams crossing

:dunce:

oh, so becks has not had his most influential games for england in the middle of the park then?

just go back to the 2-2 qualificaion draw with greece when he scored from a freekick at the end.
becks run the whole game from the middle of the park.
still his best position for england imho

you make a good point and rightly so of saying beckham must play and then go and ruin it by suggesting lennon up front... !

owen and rooney and keep playing them is my opinion.

That was five years ago !!!

Last time in played in the centre we got done by Northern Ireland

He isn't as dangerous from the middle as his crossess become long crossfield passes and therefore not as effective.

Looked poor in centre mid when he played there for Madrid and lost his game because of it, has moved back out to the right for Real and has recaptured his form this season and been Madrid's best player this season

Aaron Lennon has been absolutely key in Spurs success this season and I have seen a number of performances where he has had a massive influence on a game for 90 minutes.

In my opinion, dropping Beckham back deep to right back and keeping Lennon wide right with Downing on the left is well worth persevering with. Beckham only really got into the game when Lennon came on.

I'd keep Downing in for the time being until Joe Cole learns not to be selfish with the ball and pass it for a start.

I had a conversation with a couple of mates a few months ago about an England team with Downing on the left and Lennon on the right before they were even named in the squad, so was pretty damn pleased last night when the both finished the game on the pitch having contributed to the win.

It's ok playing Beckham at right back against T&T but to suggest he should play there against quality left wingers later in the competition is not a good idea.... not only will he fail to cope defensively against the likes of Robben and Ronaldinhio he will not be able to fenture forward so taking away his main threat

Joe Cole still must play on the left ahead of downing.
Not even a debate.

Agree 100%

Downing always looks for the bye-line, Cole runs at players and makes things happen, been the best England player over the last six months

Agree he has world class ability - if only he had a final product. He is just too selfish and really needs to bring other players into it more. I thought Downing did okay last night. Cole flatters to deceive although I agree he is by far the better player.

Cole works better when he has a player like Rooney in the side who will drop off the defence and exchange passes with him, Owen and Crouch didn't do that which leads him to effectively trying to do it himself

I'd consider this...

Terrry Carragher A Cole

Lennon Beckham Ferdinand Gerrard J Cole

Rooney Owen

With a possibility of swapping Carragher and Ferdinand over if necessary.

That would be a very bold selection.

I know, but sometimes its good to run at defenders and make them panic a bit. Sat was a prime example. The game was crying for someone to run at the defence instead of playing long balls for Crouch who had no one to aim for.
