I voted A23 until I saw those brilliant photos!

What about the big one: the A272. This road is notable for having an entire book dedicated to it: "A272: An Ode to a Road" by Pieter Boogaart, which became something of a minor cult and even inspired a TV programme.

I have that book - I've lived at both ends (in Haywards Heath & Winchester)!

The thing is, many of you are voting from a bias, Southern persepective. Of course a road that ends in Brighton is going to be quality, and of course the A23 was made into a FILM STAR by featuring in the film Genvieve - quality action.

But look north and it's all rather different. The A23 goes straight to the shithole that is Croydon.
And other comparisons: the A24 goes through Epsom (great Derby Day nap antics), the A23 makes do with boring Hickstead. The A23 bypasses Crawley, the A24 trundles past the pleasant town of Horsham.
Then you've got quality South Wimbledon/Tooting (A24) rather than Croydon (A23), and beautiful Boxhill (A24) rather than the dull plains around Gatwick (A23).

Not looking quite so clear cut anymore is it...

You lived in Winchester too?

Isn't it lovely? Splendid little city. Or at least it was until they kept tearing up the countryside for endless roads and car parks.

I camped out in protest of the destruction of our butterfly meadows but, alas, they are nothing but car park now.

Indeed - I went to VI form college there. Quality pubs, loads of history. I even lost my cherry in Winchester Cathedral grounds.

You went to Symonds?

Not wrong about the pubs and the history, although there is a worrying trend of replacing the quality old historic pubs with posh bar/restaurants. But the Exchange is still there so it's not all bad.

I did indeed. Quite liked the Exchange myself although my preference was The Vine in those days. Whereabouts did you live then? We lived up on Chilbolton Avenue - a handy 10 minute walk into town.

I know Chilbolton well. Great place for a party. Some friends of mine lived in a rather splendid house there. Bit of a trek from my home in Winnall however.

Did you know Muswells has gone? And the Old Monk (no great loss admittedly). Bar Iguana is now an Italian restaurant, as if the city needed another!!

I use both the A23 and the A24 on match days, to and from the match respectively. They both pale in comparison to the glory that is the A218 - much safer for having fun on than that death-trap (literally) section of the A24 between Capel and Horsham.

I got given that as a Christmas present by my uncle and aunt who live in Petworth. It's a very fascinating read. Does anyone know why the A272 was built? It was built to link the Ecclesiastical (church) capital (Canterbury) with the political capital, Winchester. The west part is easy. What I couldn't work out was where the road would go after Five Ash Down. Cranbrook? Hawkhurst? As for the best road in Sussex, for quality, it has to be the A23. I have to admit to burning down there at over 100 to deliver an important package to Worthing after the first driver had broken down. Happily for me, there were no police around. As a nice road, I would say you cannot beat driving up the A275 on a night where the Albion have won, the sky is bright and the moon is shining, going across Ashdown Forest. The A29 on Bury Hill is pretty special, too.
