A23 wins purely for the bit when you start heading down from the Downs to Brighton and you can see the sea in front of you.

But as a motorcylist the A272, A283 and A285 are among the best A-roads in the country, not just Sussex.

Actually, I burned it down the A272 earlier today in the sun and it was rather splendid. The only reason I didn't include it is it's too nice a road. The A23 and A24 are practically motorways

What about the big one: the A272. This road is notable for having an entire book dedicated to it: "A272: An Ode to a Road" by Pieter Boogaart, which became something of a minor cult and even inspired a TV programme.

The A286 is pretty good. Hasn't someone (german, Dutch?) written a book about the A272?

I too would go for the A259. Who can argue with views like these:

Well I am an A24 regular - and my vote goes with the A23. If it were possible to bypass Dorking then I may go with the A24. The single carriageway parts are dangerous - however - as are the dual carriageways, which is why they are putting in barriers now.

The most scenic roads ? any of the ones inland of the Downs - the one between Storrington and Amberley is stunning.
