Yesterday we went to the game in a group of eight. For FOUR of us (including 3 youngsters) it was their first visit to Withdean.

We gave them our season ticket seats in G-block, so they could sit together... and get a better view of the 'entertainment' and we sat in BLOCK U.

We had some fun in block U last night.

The Wigan support was frankly pathetic - and there were a few 'characters' in the Brighton section who helped make the evening bearable. 'Cheeky northern monkeys'

The first impression when you enter the ground, climbing through the scaffolding, is very bizarre!

The view is OK, not great for action at the far end, but it's OK, and the comments from visiting fans are overdonw (although I could understand it if it had been raining as well - and they had lost!!!).

The stadium looks at it's best from that angle.

The sight and sound of the South stand was at times quite impressive (although mainly when aimed at Mr D'Urso and chums).

Overall, I would recommend it to regular South-standers as an experience - it puts a different perspective on Withdean.

Pity about the result, but frankly WIGAN were different gravy and eased off big time in the second half.

how many did wigan bring? I met two on the way back from sheffield united (they were on the way back from rotherham) asking about nightlife in brighton.

Seemed fairly friendly... until they started singing racist chants

I would guess at about 200, maybe 250.

They were VERY quiet, for a team playing good football, at the top of the league, 4-0 up, it was PATHETIC - and they knew it

Wigan is hardly a hot-bed for football though is it, and with Everton, Liverpool, Man utd and Man city for starters on their doorstep not to mention blackburn bolton etc its understandable why they have small support. i no a wigan fan up here, and although proud to be wigan he does hate going to away games cos they never make any noise. Its gonna be quite embarrassing for them in the prem when teams like liverpool man u and everton outnumber them in their own ground though. Must admit i'd hate to be a wigan fan despite their position!!

The Albion supporters who were in the section next to the Wigan fans last night (the ones who bought the Wigan return tickets) - were AWESOME. Loads of cheering and singing.

There seemed to be a lot of publicity about the fact that Wigan had returned tickets - so I guess these were supporters who would love to come to games but just assume that most are sold out.

If these are the kind of fans that are being turned away from Withdean every fortnight because they can't get tickets then it's yet ANOTHER reason why I can't WAIT until we get Falmer.

Shame the stewards / police were not as impressed as the rest of you with U blocks attempt to liven up the atmosphere. As soon as you stood up, started a song or indulged in a bit of banter with the Wigan fans you were videoed by PC plod and hasseled by stewards.

The stewarding and policing was just slightly over the top - but I can understand that they would be ultra-cautious with two groups of fans separated by four seats covered in plastic netting.

It was nearly all good humoured on both sides and very enjoyable, so I don't think it would ever have turned ugly - unlike some of the 'cheeky northern monkeys

He looked totally bemused and unsure what to do next, after he jumped over the fence.

It was surely the MOST PATHETIC ATTEMPT at a pitch invasion... EVER

I was sat in V block, but noticed in U block a chap waring a Pink Goalie shirt and a leopard skin fronted baseball cap - he was quite vocal and obviously enjoying himself. At half time i was walking back along the track to my seat with the said man walking in front of me, a steward pulled him to one side to have a word, the fella turned to the steward and said whats the problem - is it my shirt?? I thought it was amusing anyway.

What about the whipper snappers chanting Wigan from the woods behind the goal in what looked like someones back garden, most people around us laughed, but why did it require about 5 stewards to go off into the darkeness in pursuit?

I had a long chat with a long term (Northern Premier League long) Wigan supporter in the pub yesterday.

He was full of praise for the efforts that Brighton supporters have made to keep The Albion alive. He concluded that if the same thing had happened at Wigan (which it nearly did before Whelan got in there) then they would have gone under as he felt that people up there are apathetic.

Strangest thing was that I didn't realise that the once mighty Wigan R.L.F.C. (now Warriors) nearly went bust and Whelan bailed them out. Central Park, the old rugby league ground was actually slap bang in the middle of town and it was tradition for husbands and wives to go into Wigan together, the men to watch the game and the women to do the shopping !

I was enjoying a sing song trying to make the best of a bad night. The stewards had a word with me telling me to sit down, so I started the usual "stand up if you want falmer".

Later in the firsty half I indulged in a bit of banter with the northern monkeys. Told off again by the stewards thid time just the three of em.

Half time I decided a wee, coffee and a pie could cheer things up. Thats when the bastards jumped me.

Me "nah it's ok im off to the loo"
