Yes, each film is £6.70 or something so if you see two films you see the second one for half price pretty much and the third one is free. Not sure how they can afford to do this as I have learned to never buy any food from the cinema.

Sometimes I just turn up and see whatever film is on next. If I don't like it I just walk out and see something else.

I was persuaded to buy a membership for the Duke of Yorks when I went to see Die Hard 2 last year in the Bad Film Club.

I haven't been back since. Waste of money that turned out to be!!

Must look into it. I also get a discount at the Komedia where I go every week so it's probably been worth it.

There was an expose (i use the term loosely) on TV recently on the cost of cinema food and their willingness to allow people to take in their own food. And do so very blatantly.

Anyway since that happened, and it may just be coincidental, they seem to have brushed up their act a little bit. I've noticed that Vue do a 'snack pack' where you get a regular coke (so only about 2 litres or something), popcorn and a kitkat for £3. Still expensive but not stupidly so.

Beyond that I also noticed they do a special offer before 7 o'clock. Any 8 items off a selected list (and it includes hot dogs, small coke etc) for £6.96. It's aimed at a family of 4 but no reason why it has to be. Again, compared to cinemas of old it represents reasonable value.

Unfortunatley the food is the only way a cinema can make any real profit, especially with independant cinemas like the dukes, the distributors will ask anything up to 65% of the takings on a first run film, that amounts to £4.22 out of a ticket price of £6.50, and that's without wages or overheads.

How can Cineworld make any money out of someone like me who has the membership card, goes to the cinema 3 or 4 times a month and doesn't buy any food? I read somewhere that the movie companies really make their money from the DVD and the cinema is now seen as a place to preview the forthcoming DVD!

Because there are not many like you who dont buy food, believe it or not people come to the Duke Of Yorks and buy a bag of sweets for £2 that they could get in the shop next door for £1.20, 8 out of 10 people will buy some form of food or drink in the cinema.

The card system works for Cineworld because they are a much bigger cinema with several screens, like i said they wont make much out of the ticket sales, so getting people in as many times as possible means they can sell the stuff that really makes them the money.

The DVD's do make money, hence that is why they now come out so quickly after the films release in the cinema, although the dvd disributor rights are often different to those of the film.

But what does suprise me is how cheap i can get films on dvd that are not that old. Got The 40 year old virgin for £2.99 the other week

A friend of mine works in a Vue cinema and they were all told that cinemas take £1 out of every ticket as the rest goes to the film makers...As for prices of food and drink...I never purchase it. Went to the "cinema" in Burgess Hill and was a great price £3.90 per person as a monday night (cheap night for me making it up to the girlfriend). The seat was awful but other than that it was fine! The price of food and drink was outrageuous I don't think anything was less than £2!

Walk from work to one of the last remaining UCI cinemas in the known world - free
Buy food/drinks from the Dunnes Stores thats in the same shopping centre - under a fiver
Use one of a literal book of free passes I got off a mate who's an area manager - free
Driver back and take car from free car parking in office - free

Only problem is I can't go to a movie thats less than a week on release on the free passes, but thats not a major issue.

On the note of it being a UCI, do brands come to Dublin to die? We still have Tower Records and Dixons as well...
