Outside of Albion I loved the 79 final, Arsenal 2 up with five to go and man utd scoring twice to take it into extra time. Alan Sunderland scoring the winner in extra time. What a finale.

It will never get back to where it once was.
The most important day in the football calendar, when families would gather round the set, friends would come round and most of the country stopped for the FA Cup Final. When excited schoolboys would grab the Radio Times to see when the days events would start ( 10.30-11.00 usually ) " How the teams got there "..." The teams at their pre-match hotels " "...Meet the players "..."Its a Cup Final knockout "..." Celebrity fans "...." Community singing "
For the players it was the most treasured medal. To play in a Wembley Cup Final was the highlight of their careers. It was five or six hours that you set aside. Nothing got in the way. Even if you were playing school sport in the morning, you rushed back to view it.
It was still very special in 83 but its lost its glamour now. Sad but thats the way football has gone, with games now shown, morning ,noon and night. Even the players don't rate it that highly anymore.

Summed it up perfectly. I remember those days too!

As a 14-year old, meeting Stuart Hall briefly in Peter Robinson's office after the Anfield game in 1983 was a highlight for me.

Sweet Jesus. Are you male or female?

Wimbledon finished seventh in the league. In what conceivable way were they massive underdogs?

An equivalent from last season would be Man Utd beating Man City.

People always talk about it as a great giantkilling, but it really wasn't. And Wimbledon were one of the most detested teams at the time because of their long-ball tactics and their thuggish style of play. Personally, I was gutted Liverpool didn't thrash them.

I get what you're saying. But Liverpool absolutely destroyed the League that season, didn't they? It was the season of Barnes, Beardsley and Aldridge, and they were completely dominant. Nobody thought Wimbledon's cloggers would do them over in the season's finale.

I for one was delighted that they did though.

Used to like Wimbledon when they were a non-league club, but I just never had any affection for the likes of 'Harry' Bassett, Vinnie Jones and Dennis Wise - and the media tag of the 'Crazy Gang' used to really grate. They played awful, ugly football too.

It's interesting, as if you look back at old games, there was far more "long ball" football from most teams, not just Wimbledon. Although I suppose in the case of Wimbledon, that was their clearly defined and only tactic, whereas other sides at least had and used other options. But even if you watch Liverpool, the most successful team of the era, there seem to be far more balls played over the top from the likes of Hansen and Lawrenson than you would get from even their most agricultural defenders now.

Liverpool of 1988 should have easily turned Wimbledon over, but they did often seem to have a bit of a mental block against them for whatever reason.

Nope - Sunderland scored in injury time to win it. There was no extra-time that year.
