Heading for shore
The Hazards of Love 4 (The Drowned) by The Decemberists

Margaret array the rocks around the hole before we're sinking
A million stones, a million bones, a million holes within the chinking

And painting rings around your eyes these peppered holes
So filled with crying
A whisper-weight upon the tattered down where you and I
Were lying

So tell me now, O tell me this: a river's son, a forest's daughter
A willow wand, a will-o-wisp, our ghosts will wander all of the water

So let's be married here today these rushing waves to bare our witness
And we will lie like river stones, rolling only where it takes us
But I pulled you and I called you here
And I caught you and I brought you here
But these hazards of love
Never more will trouble us

O Margaret the lapping waves are licking quietly at our ankles
Another bow, another breath: this brilliant chill has come to shackle

But with this long last rush of air let's speak our vows in starry whispers
And when the waves came crashing down, he closed his eyes
And softly kissed her

But I pulled you and I called you here
And I caught you and I brought you here
These hazards of love
Never more will trouble us

In a pile of football shirts
Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude

The guy is a prize twat (IMO) but he has written some truely special songs over the years, with some wonderful lyrices, that is one of my favourites.

Let not mercy and truth escape thee now
im saying
Bind them about thy neck, write them up on the tables of thy heart.

Freddie McGregor - Wine of violence (Studio One)

Whenever I hear the song, I always think, feck, they dont write lyrics like that anymore.
Reggae lyrics these days have included f*** your mother...

Think I prefer the old studio one tunes.

The Decemberistsare one of my faourite bands. The best lyricist in moder indie/rock has to be John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats though.

[yt]rUbFljMLIY8[/yt]

Fog lifts from the harbor, dawn goes down today
An agent crests the shadows of the nearby alleyway
Piles of broken bricks, sign posts on the path
Every moment points towards the aftermath
Yeah ah ah

Sailors straggle back from their nights out on the town
Hopeless urchins from the city gather around
Spies from imperial China wash in with the tide
Every battle heads toward surrender on both sides

And I am coming home to you
With my own blood in my mouth
And I am coming home to you
If it's the last thing that I do

Bells ring in the tower, wolves howl in the hills
Chalk marks show up on a few high windowsills
And a rabbit gives up somewhere, and a dozen hawks descend
Every moment leads toward its own sad end
Yeah ah ah

Ships loosed from their moorings capsize and then they're gone
Sailors with no captains watch awhile and then move on
And an agent crests the shadows and I head in her direction
All roads lead toward the same blocked intersection

I am coming home to you
With my own blood in my mouth
And I am coming home to you
If it's the last thing that I do

"People who used to dream about the future" by A Girl Called Eddy

Drinking our coffee
It's a quarter to three
No one in this place
Just us and our mistakes
You in the corner
That stupid smile
On your face
Tell me is there a way to replace
All the dreams
That didn't come true
Once we were happy

Once we were people
Who used to dream about the future
Once we were people
With stars in our eyes

Do you remember when I was your
'Alice blue gown'
And you were the handsome young
Prince in his crown
Now the rain hits the roof
And your realize
That even your youth has let you down
Oh don't go cry in your beer
'Cause it all ends in tears
Remember when we were happy

Once we were people
Who used to dream about the future
Yeah, once we were people
With stars in our eyes

Once we were people
Who used to dream about the future

But where did it all go
Where did it all go
Where did it all go

When did we stop taking pictures
And when did you lose all your fight
And where did you sign
Give up and resign
I never gave up on you
No, I never gave up on you

Once we were people
Who used to dream about the future
Once we were people
With stars in our eyes

Once we were people
Once we were people

No matter how close to yours anothers steps have grown, in the end there is one dance you'll do alone.

For a Dancer by Jackson Browne. The whole song has great lyrics but that is the stand out part for me.

Nice cutting song we can all relate to from Robert Zimmerman

You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning

You got a lotta nerve
To say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on
The side that’s winning

You say I let you down
You know it’s not like that
If you’re so hurt
Why then don’t you show it

You say you lost your faith
But that’s not where it’s at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it

I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
You’re in with

Do you take me for such a fool
To think I’d make contact
With the one who tries to hide
What he don’t know to begin with

You see me on the street
You always act surprised
You say, “How are you?” “Good luck”
But you don’t mean it

When you know as well as me
You’d rather see me paralyzed
Why don’t you just come out once
And scream it

No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief
Perhaps I’d rob them

And now I know you’re dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don’t you understand
It’s not my problem

I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you

Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You’d know what a drag it is
To see you

Close, I reckon it's for all the JCLs

Reckon it applies to American Express more so. They didn't offer the slightest bit of support all the way through the multiple Inquiries. Only came 'onside' when the war was won. They'd not have batted an eyelid if we'd gone under. C unts.

Another Bob Dylan one I love is "Money doesn't talk it swears" from It's alright ma.

And I've always had a fondness for the Manic Street Preachers' Holy Bible album, especially this one:

Heading for shore
Jed the Humanoid by Grandaddy

Last night something pretty bad happened
We lost a friend
All shocked and broken
Shut down, exploded

JED-E3 is what we first called him
Then it was "Jed,"
But Jed's system's dead
Therefore, so's Jed

We assembled him in the Kitchen
Made out of this and
Made out of that and
Whatever was at hand

When we finished Jed we were so proud
We celebrated
Congratulated
At what we'd created

Jed could run or walk, sing or talk, and
Compile thoughts, and
Solve lots of problems
We learned so much from him

A couple years went by and something happened
We gave Jed less attention
We had new inventions
We left for a convention

Jed had found our booze and drank every drop
He fizzled and popped
He rattled and knocked
Finally he just stopped

I still cite 'You'll see kidney machines replaced by rockets and guns' from 'Going Underground' as a sort of music/life epiphany for me - I was very young

And then there was the opening line of 'Plaistow Patricia' by Ian Dury & The Blockheads . . .

A stunning line, and very sad all at the same time.
