Exeter have been ordered to replay their cup tie against Bradford City .

0-0 after 90 minutes then Exeter make a 6th Substitute at the start of extra time, and win 3-0. But only 5 substitutes allowed over the course of the entire game.

They seem picky enough about some things... the pedantic **** in charge of Stockport v Bolton waited for minutes for the corner flag to be re-planted before restarting the game and immediately blowing the final whistle.

Sloppy but can see why it happened. In most cups they have introduced the rule where you have an additional sub in extra time.

Yeh, the 4th official does always have his hands full, so shouldn't have to be burdened with yet another task

The club claimed that they were twice told by officials that an extra sub was allowed. In fact I think I read that the coaching staff were actually given a sixth "paddle" to hand the fourth official to advise him of an imminent substitution.

Either way, ECFC could have easily been chucked out.

I would have expected the 4th official to have been keeping a record of the number of substitutions made but that does not in any way absolve Exeter of their responsibility to count up to five.

Law 3 states that there shall be a maximum of FIVE substitutes. It goes on to say:-

The competition rules must state

whether one additional substitute may be used when a match goes into extra time (whether or not the team has already used the full number of permitted substitutes)

If the competition rules do not state that a sixth extra time substitute can be used, then they can't. Is it that difficult? Exeter had an obligation to understand the rules of the competition that they entered. No sympathy. They should have been kicked out.

I'm sure that happens sometimes but according to the rules (for right or wrong) it is up to the teams to keep track of that.

On a somewhat related note.....

Earlier this month the Lewes U-18s lost at home to Bromley in the FA Youth Cup 1st round. Subsequently, the FA decided that due to "an extraordinary incident" in the fixture, the match "was not played in accordance with the Laws of the Game as these had not been applied by the referee" and the game should be replayed (but at Bromley).

Lewes also lost the replayed tie. Does anyone know what the "extraordinary incident" was? It seems odd that the replayed match should switch to be hosted by the other team.
