The only thing I know about Newcastle rugby is that under Rob Andrew they were one of the clubs most implacably opposed to promotion and relegation.

I have never understood why that view is tolerated in rugby, let alone been perfectly acceptable (as it seems to be), when it is anathema to any football fan.

Might get to see Jonny Wilkinson play too, well he normally plays one game a year for Newcastle, injured the rest.

I think Newcastle is a bit of a strange team really. A mate of mine lived all his life in Durham and played rugby there but neve really supported Newcastle rugby, its only really sicne they linked up with John Hall from the football side of things that they took off - not sure now if that link still exists.

Anyway, in terms of players they just so happen to have Jonny Wilkinson in their team, kind of a recognisable rugby player. Also they have Matthew Tait who is an up and coming player, should be good for England in years to come.

Not too sure they are that well supported. Its not quite like it is down here in the south west in places like Bath, Bristol and Gloucester but you'll find it easier to get a ticket there than you would St James Park.

And that GENIUS system whereby at the end of the season, the top 4 teams all play off to decide who is to be declared the "champions".

That is one seriously f***ed up sport.

Newcastle is a great club, and the supporters I've encountered both home and away are very friendly and enthusiastic. Go along, you can even have a beer whilst your watching the match.

With Andrew gone, Newcastle are going to struggle (particularly if Wilkinson gets injured again), and are many peoples relegation favourites:(

(with regards to the promo/relegation arguement, it is generally felt that in the next couple of years the premiership will be expanded to 14 clubs (Leeds and one from Cornwall (or Plymouth)) and then ringfenced)

It depends what you mean by "in Newcastle". The ground is a good 20-25 minute train journey out of the city centre.

are they any good?

They've been mid-table at best for the past few seasons.

any recognisable players to an armchair fan?

Jonny Wilkinson and Matthew Tait are the only two that a casual follower of the England side would have heard of.

how cheap is it?

They aren't giving individual ticket prices on their website at the moment, but season tickets start from £168, which works out at about £7.50 per game.

Been to Kingston Park many times, heartily endorse what Dr Q says, the friendliest bunch of rugby supporters you will find, without the snob element you find down south.

It is pretty easy to get to, just a ride on the Metro to Bank Foot and a very good pub called the Twin Farms outside the ground where both sets of supporters will mix.

Are they any good, well, they won the league once about 10 years ago and the cup a couple of times since then, but are probably underachievers in the last 2 or 3 years. Will be interesting to see how they get on without Rob Andrew, who has now taken over the England supremo job.

Bound to be cheaper than St James Park, they probably do NUS prices. The beer is certainly very cheap inside the ground and of course you can drink it at your seat :drink: :drink: :drink:

I think they are playing all their home games on Friday evenings this season.

I'd be grateful if you could put bitching aside for a bit longer than a few moments.

The games seem to be spread all over the place, half on Saturdays, half on Sundays and a couple forced to Fridays to accommodate the Premiership football rule of no games 24 hours before a Premiership fixture.

What happend with Sky and Watford, because they will presumably have the same issues with us and Saracens?

The game vs wasps at the Causeway on the 8th Sept is also on a Friday night....which is a pain.
