Cardiff are part of the Welsh FA so cant compete in Europe under the English FA place.

If Porstmouth finish 6th, they get a European Place, I they win the FA CUp they get a European place, meaning one space is spare.

Does it go to the team that finish 7th in the Premier League or does it go to the team Portsmouth knocked out the cup last. As it cant be Cardiff, will it be West Brom???

I believe its because the club are regestered with the FAW. Therefore the powers that be would be reluctant to enter them in to the English FA's place for Europe. I may be wrong but this is the way I understand it. It would go to the 6th place team in the Prem (likely to be Everton unfortunatley).

this was on the radio this morning and so here from the horses mouth, ie a UEFA representitive:

they do not currently qualify for a place but the UEFA are looking at giving them a wild card entry should they win. no decision has been made as they will not convene a metting about the issue until after the cup match. he explicitly stated that this was because there was no point deciding it before hand (thats the French way i suppose). the fact they did not cover the scenario of Portsmouth being 5th and winning the cup implies that they will only consider Cardiff if they win. didnt mention why theres no automatic spot for Cardiff unfortunatly.

Portsmouth haven't qualified for Europe anyway though.

The Uefa Cup places go to 5th(Everton), the League Cup winners(Spurs) and the FA Cup winners.

Had Chelsea won the League Cup then that place would have gone to 6th in the League, meaning that if Pompey then finished 6th Cardiff would get into Europe even as FA Cup runner-up.

Subject to Cardiff being allowed in of course, as Statto says.

If pompey finished 6th they wouldnt qualify for europe through the league. There is only one Uefa place for the league positions. (the only reason the 6th place team has got into Europe in recent seasons, is because two teams in the top 4 or 5 have competed in the final). If they lost the final and finished 6th they'd probably still get in as Cardiff more than likely wont be allowed. Hope thats clear.

If Cardiff are to qualify for Europe then they should go through the route that all Welsh teams attempt to do and not through the English FA qualifying spots.I dont know their views on this issue but if they start bleeting about it not being fair then everyone should remember the fuss they made when they did not want the national anthem played before their play-off final against QPR at the Mill stad a few years ago insisting they were WELSH, the game was played in WALES and they did not consider the national anthem appropriate even though they were contesting an English FA final.

f*** em.

Wasn1t there also the transfer fuss with Sheff Utd i think where they asked for a dispensation ruling because they were not English and so could play by a different set of rules............

They play by different sets of rules when it suits them................ so

I found this on AOL sport .

The Football Association have "not ruled out" Cardiff qualifying for Europe if they win the FA Cup.

Under the current rules, the Bluebirds would not go into the UEFA Cup because they are a Welsh club playing in an English league, but UEFA may give them a wild card entry if they beat Portsmouth in the final, and the FA have left the door open to a rule change themselves.

An FA spokesman said: "Following Sunday's FA Cup semi-final, the FA has been discussing the issue of Cardiff City entering the UEFA Cup next season should they win the FA Cup. We will also continue to discuss this with the FA of Wales and UEFA."

He added: "At this stage we have not ruled out Cardiff City being entered into Europe via the FA Cup should they win it. However, further conversations need to take place but we would expect to have final clarification on this before the end of the month - well before the final takes place on May 17."

Uefa plan may hurt Welsh football

Former FAW secretary Alun Evans claims Uefa's plans to allow Cardiff to enter Europe if they win the FA Cup could damage the future of Welsh football.

Cup winners usually qualify for Europe but under current rules Cardiff cannot as they are classed as a Welsh club.

However, Uefa are considering handing them a wildcard entry should they beat Portsmouth in the final on 17 May.

Evans says this will damage FAW plans to help Welsh clubs qualify for Europe through Welsh leagues and competitions.

"I think it's a short-term gain for a long-term loss," explained Evans, who outlined plans for the future development of Welsh football in a strategic document he presented to the Welsh FA earlier this year.

"I think now is the time for us to focus on getting the Welsh clubs playing in Europe on a regular basis and that can only be done by acceptance that playing in Welsh competitions is acceptable to Uefa.

"If Cardiff were to represent England, as they effectively would to all intents and purposes, and certainly in the view of the other European nations, then I think we would have problem persuading Uefa to revisit the problems of Welsh football.

"I'm not wishing to deny Cardiff City, in fact I would be quite happy to see them play in Europe. I'm just saying these are the disadvantages of taking this quick fix."

In his document entitled 'FAW Strategic Plan 2007-2012', Evans called for Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham to be permitted to field teams in the Welsh Premier League.

He suggested the three exiled clubs be allowed to continue to play in the English Football League but field second teams in the Welsh Premier.

Assuming these second teams finished high enough in the Welsh Premier to qualify for European competitions, the trio could then provide more powerful Welsh representation in Europe than is currently provided by Welsh Premier clubs.

But Evans says if Cardiff are allowed to play in Europe by qualifying by winning an English competition, like the FA Cup, it will put paid to these plans and effectively hinder the long-term development of Welsh football.

Uefa rules stopped Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham, plus Colwyn Bay, Merthyr and Newport, from using Welsh competitions to reach Europe when they continued in the English League rather than join the League of Wales when it was established.

Under normal circumstances the FA Cup winners qualify for the Uefa Cup, but Cardiff's problem is that as a Welsh club - although playing in the English league pyramid - they are not affiliated to the English FA.

The Football Association says it will not nominate Cardiff as the Welsh club as a 'guest' team.

However, Uefa president Michel Platini has already expressed his support for Cardiff if they win the Cup, with Uefa spokesman William Gaillard reiterating that support on Monday.

Let EUFA give them a wild card that gets an extra British team in as we would still have 3 , Spurs plus 2 on league placings. I do no think that EUFA will be able to force the FA to give Cardiff one of their spots.
