Keep talking, keep communicating, keep doing whatever you need to to keep your head above water. We can't all be there for you all the time but there are enough of us for someone to be around when you need us. Keep in touch, keep yourself as your best friend until someone else takes over. If you can rely on yourself, rely on us, and rely on a few others as time goes by you'll manage this better than you might think is possible at the moment. One day at a time - stay strong.

very good post.

Fortunately these days people are more receptive to the idea of depression, far too long considered a taboo subject. I'm sure I speak for many on here and as Dan Aitch has posted we are here for you, please use us if it helps. Many on here are complete strangers but sometimes it helps to talk to a stranger who is prepared to listen. I for one am all ears.

Good luck and as the advert says "it's good to talk"

Depression is an awful, awful thing. Never be afraid to ask for help or to speak to someone, the catharsis of doing so is incredibly liberating. It's wonderful to hear you've got a loving family to support you. Stay strong, we all wish you well.

No, definitely isn't. Great point.
I think the biggest issue is that the doctors just want to fire anti depressants at you in which isn't the awnser...I honestly believe that communication is key when sharing your problems and doing research overtime is the key to success.
Pills are a no no and are just a temporary solution :)

Is there such a thing as depression ?
Personally I'd say it's more a case of anxiety although I'm certainly no expert.
Unless you give Sir Doctor Albion more info on why you're depressed then we can work from there me old mucker roooo...
Death in the family
Insecurities within yourself
Traumatised from past events
Split from ex
Etc etc

Sometimes life pushes you to the extreme and there seems no way out,but certainly for most it's the start of a new beginning.
Very glad you're still with us :)

There isn't always a "why", which makes depression a bugger to understand.

Good on RMT for being open about this, and good luck to him.

Be careful about offering such advice (the bits about pills), when you've already admitted you're not an expert and know nothing about the OP's situation.

Keep talking and you'll find the way through.
Don't expect it to be a short journey - it rarely is- but don't for a minute think there isn't going to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Just takes some finding.

99% of the time there is a "why"...you don't just get depressed by sitting down watching television pal....Something triggers these emotions of negativity within yourself.
You have a ladder that starts with anxiety symptoms and can lead to mental health issues as more symptoms arise it becomes very difficult to deal with as you brain gets fixated on negativity and bad thoughts...the more you focus on these symptoms the worse you get... yes not always the case, but personally that's my opinion and only an opinion :)

Yeah and doctors are supposed to be experts on these matters yeah?
They haven't a clue from experience and will just throw pills at you and boot you out the door.

Yes you maybe right about advice, but would like to think I'm a positive person who offers something different than the usual trip to the doctors and getting pills.

It's not rocket science that for most pills are not the awnser as the nhs doesn't have the recourses for one to one counciling.

Wish the bloke well and speaking to people about it is huge :)

An opinion that is based on no medical knowledge or evidence whatsoever. It's the "pull yourself together" attitude, and it ignores the fact that for some people depression is real and debilitating, and is caused by chemical anomolies in brain function.

You are clearly lucky enough not to suffer from this. That doesn't mean that everybody's physiology is the same as yours.

Good luck RMT.

You start off by being very dogmatic - "pal", then finish off by saying that it's "only an opinion". Am I alone in finding this confusing.

This thread is not attention seeking OP, it is good to get it out, I can't say I have had full on depression before, but I feel I've been close, I went through a period, where I felt worthless and eventually where thoughts of taking my own life started to pop into my head, talking to people stopped these, I do sort of know how it feels.

Depression is awful, it's something that can you can not see just by looking at someone. Unless someone tells you they suffer from it, you are likely to never know.

My daughter is a doctor and currently in training to become a GP, having already qualified as a surgeon.

As part of her training she is currently on an 8 month placement in a psychiatric hospital, which can be fairly harrowing.

Mental illness seems to be taken very seriously in GP training, which somewhat gives the lie to this load of old cobblers.

I must admit I had many dark thoughts when I was with my first wife, now things are a little diferent I am with the second and there nothing better than a bloody good row to clear the air which never happened with the first.
you look after yourself, try and be with people you love and who love you
