The pretentious part is that she went out of her way to prove how much she doesn't like Tories or Michael Gove surrounded by an audience that agrees with her. It would be different if she was selling them outside parliament or somewhere posh like richmond.

It's a bit like on here when people try and prove how much they hate the daily mail. I think pretty much everyone agrees it's sh*t and full of lies, but still they fight for brownie points to see who hates it the most

Ironically this story was published at the same time as the OECD report which found that England is the only developed country producing school leavers who are worse at maths and reading than their grandparents.

As for education, it's always discussed in simplistic terms. We have the super heroes eg. the superheads who "turn round" academies and produce fantastic results. Then there are the bad guys like Gove and others who probably have views opposed to Gove's.

I'm pretty sure she has little or no interest in Michael Gove other to see that he has become a hate figure for some and is going to cash in on that.
As for reading standards, I don't want to go right off topic or hijack this thread but..... Mrs V is a specialist ECAR teacher, its a specialist reading intervention to try to boost reading skills in 6-7 year olds who are having trouble. She takes a group of 5 children and each has a half hour one to one lesson reading and writing each day.

The sad fact is that the children do usually get a great boost from this 20 week course but usually, improvements are not built on in the home environment and all the gains lost. Effectively, lots of her kids have no family culture of reading together or even taking an interest in their childs development. It's quite common for one or both parents to be illiterate. It is incredibly sad as when I was a parent to a 6 year old and we went to the school open evenings to meet the teachers, after asking how my daughter was doing in each subject I would ask " what can we do at home to help ? " Now there is a culture of expecting teachers to fully educate and babysit while the parents watch boxed sets of Lost etc.

She just recognises that Gove is not capable of sorting it out. He seems to know as much about education as Conan the Barbarian.

Good point well made.

My wife is in education at an older age level - 6th form - and there is a clear distinction between parents who are supportive of their children and who have high - sometimes too high - expectations of them and for them, and children who might be very bright but whose parents are sometimes at worst non-supportive or at best have low expectations of what their children are capable of.

Edit - actually I don't think I'm a right-winger anymore. And I'm not sure anyone comes out of this thread smelling of roses.
