I had some english red wine the other day, piss-weak and flavourless - called Three Mills or something. Avoid :moo:

only on special occasions would i purchase a grand cru

You're getting very technical there. Price ranges not fancy names please!

Possibly Three Choirs? I thought it was ok but French is better - Beaune, Rhone, Medoc. Then again as the OP said there are some nice new world wines around and someone else pointed out that Rioja isn't too shabby either.............. hell I'll happily go for pretty much anything over 12% and the best thing about wine is that once you've opened the bottle it's really wasteful not to finish it :)

I have had the pleasure of drinking some very expensive wines (restaurant prices admittedly but north of £500 a bottle) and you are quite right IMO - there is a level (and not that high a level) above which the law of diminishing appreciation applies. I wouldn't dream of paying more than £12-£15 a bottle from the offie and only then for a special treat. I really enjoy wine but on average I guess I pay between £4 and £8 a bottle and it's more than enough to find some very nice wines indeed.

It's true and ridiculous to perhaps go over the price you have quoted, wine is wine and unless it came with bread and fishes for the thousands, the rest is just nonsense...
