Now I'm no connoisseur by any stretch, I choose by price.

But I have discovered that when buying wine, (only red or rose cos I hate white) you have to go for the New World wines.

European wine, especially French, is bloody horrible.

But it's probably just me.

Chilean is nice - fruity and pretty versatile.

Give me a bottle of Brouilly any day, hoever.

You really need to try a good Rioja.

I love Spanish wine, including their whites and their rose.

Go to the South of Spain (away from the Brits) and you will see locals quite happily drinking chilled reds as well. It's lovely...

mate, bit of a wino myself,
new world all the way for me, normally chile, and normally a shiraz.
seems you have to spend a fair bit to get a decent french/european wine (IMO),
but then again, i'm more of a pisshead than a connoisseur, to be fair......

ps, sent from my sofa drinking a quite tasty bottle of £3.50 'Vin Rouge'....

Terrific insight there. NSC's own Oz Clarke has been unearthed!

Can't whack a nice Bordeaux.

Currently working my way through a bottle of Alexis Lichine "Cuvee f***ing exceptionnelle". One of a case bought on a day trip to Dieppe just before Christmas.

Fair enough, I don't drink a lot of Red - but don't go for anything light. I like being smacked round the head with it. I find New World Wines really boring.

hmmmmm...............obviously a Pino

as a general rule of thumb i would suggest northern hemisphere for white, southern for red.
particularly nice is a south eastern australian shiraz.

for me, the cheaper the bottle of red, the easier it is to drink, tesco do a couple great bottles for about £3 (Marques de Lyon is one) and they are really good. When in South of France i buy from a local vineyard Rose wine and its cost 1 euro a litre and its top top stuff served really cold wth ice...
