Anyway. I'm going to have a shower and settle down for the evening with my Breaking Bad box set. Have a good one and keep it clean and fair

PS cracking Paul McCartney inspired programme on Radio 6 at the moment. Paul McCartney is the theme and people text Tom Robinson with any McCartney related or inspired songs, no matter how tenuous, and he plays them.

cant argue with that mate, you are right.

but my sympathies lie with Greece who spent 25 years as an economic basket case after the German occupation, leading directly to the Colonels, and the consequent problems in Cyprus, directly caused by German aggression. I know you have a soft spot for them, but the repercussions of the German invasion of Greece and the Balkans are still being felt and have led indirectly to the brutal and horrific Yugoslav wars 50 years on, the Cyprus problem and mainland Greece political instability. No wonder they hate them.

Hmmm. I hear you regarding Greece and totally understand what you're saying. I'm not sure I agree re Yugoslavia though.

seriously mate? the yugoslav wars are utterly, utterly, linked to third reich aggression (and perhaps more to the point the vacuum after their retreat)

although arguably they could be blamed on ottoman aggression a few centurys prior. but that doesnt fit so neatly into my Merkel narrative. ;-)

Exit polls suggest Merkel is set for a third term. Great result for Europe and if those two SPD fellas get into parliament a total disaster for Cameron and his attempt to re-write the EU treaty. Good day all round I think.

And yet the BBC are reporting that the result is a good one for Cameron's plans.

Her preferred coalition partner is the FDP but it looks like they have less than the 5% they need to enter parliament. This means she will have to strike a deal with the SDP who look to have around 25%.

Just looking at the numbers. I'm not up-to-date with German politics, but couldn't she go in with the Greens? They might not strike such a hard bargain as the SDP, and my guess is that (as with the FDP) it can be easier for the main party to go into coalition with a small party than with their main rivals. Presumably since she came out against nuclear power, a tie-up with Merkel might not be so out of the question for the Greens these days. Also they don't seem to have done that well, so they might relish the thought of getting their profile back up with a role in government and some junior ministers etc.

I think this vote provides much needed stability and whilst long term things will be better across the EU zone, short term it will be very tough for some countries.
Perhaps this time she will take the corruption out of the EU... any organisation that cannot have it's accounts signed off for over 14 years... tells you that there is something wrong....don't the Greeks,Italians,Spanish love being looked after as they watch their countries plunge deeper in the abyss...
You might like this countrys rules being written by the Community...I'd prefer to have a government where I can vote them out if they're not doing a good job...sooner wer'e out of it the better
