[Football] A genuine question - what did the UK gain from Indian occupation?

I think a lot of countries have remained in the commonwealth because of the queen. Now she has gone I think more of them will be leaving over the next few years. The Sussexes, on some of their recent trips, did not exactly cover themselves with glory

I think it was the Cambridges who visited the Caribbean.

It's not just British companies though is it? And slavery continues today despite our best efforts to eradicate it. And British companies also exploit British people. There are so many ills in the world, and to repeat, they are not the fault of the ordinary contemporary British people - and historical ones certainly aren't.

Nope, not just British companies obviously though they're no doubt among the worst along with the other traditional colonial powers. And yes, they also exploit British people, but I rarely hear about anyone dying from starvation in England.

I disagree that they're not at least partially the fault of contemporary people. I certainly blame myself and others for doing very very little protesting about Swedish weapon sales (among the most profitable per capita) and then vote for parties wanting to stop immigration - it is a shameful combination. As a people we are ignoring the our atrocities in other parts of the world - we rather watch TV than learn about what Lundin Oil did in Sudan, we rather do nothing than go out and protest the lack of humanity shown by our big (sometimes state owned) companies. Its on us, we have all the opportunities to educate ourselves and try to improve the world but we choose not to. Same goes for you guys over there - I've been reading British newspapers (well mainly The Guardian) daily for ten years and you rarely see a single soul protest the ongoing robbery of poor countries.

We might not have created the troubles but most of us are doing very little to solve it and in my eyes that makes us accomplices.

Exactly. Also the US never wanted to join. Ireland quit in 1949. South Africa, who should never have been members with an Apartheid regime left of their own accord before rejoining.
The US??... they were independent in the 18th Century... 150 years before the Commonwealth was established... jesus wept

It continues today, which is something a lot seem to forget. British companies are exploiting poor countries, stealing their natural resources.

may be worth having a look to the East as well, China supping countries in Africa and S America dry of natural resources, under the guise of building shitty roads etc. Appreciate you love having a dig at Britian, but we're not the only bad guys out there.

I know, and some of you are VERY eager to point elsewhere when someone points at you.

But yeah obviously China is doing a hell of a good job catching up with the rest of us... something that not surprisingly began when they started to adopt the Western way of capitalism.

I'm not sure why people are so upset at the condemnation of the British ruling class. The Empire merely made them stronger whilst most British people were subject to the enclosures, vagrancy laws, the workhouse, child labour, slums, pollution. Just as for the people of the empire, British people have had to fight the same powers to win the vote, the right to strike, the weekend, freedom of speech and movement, decent pay and homes. I'm pretty sure the vast majority of NSC users British ancestors gained little from the Empire and should stop being so touchy when it's questioned

Well put, as well as the Clearances in Scotland (not just in the Highlands but across the country), the famine in Irelandy (another form of clearances) people were starving but English Lords still exported grain - which could have avoided the famine.

Not having a pop, but in my job I was encouraged to spread my newspaper reading across two or preferably three different newspapers to try and get a balance, rather than just the one that initially seems to resonate and reinforce our own views.

Try reading your own link. The US has never been in the Commonwealth but could apply to join as a former colony, but never has therefore has never been in the Commonwealth.

Not me that should be doing the reading.

When commentators decry a bad tackle do you shout at the TV that there have been other bad tackles elsewhere?

He certainly was. Partition killed an estimated million people and displaced 15 million. Can't recall how many Canadian's were killed in his WWII Dieppe raid.

Thanks for the history lesson.

You are still a class act

That’s an incredibly simplistic statement. British occupation had huge benefits as well as huge draw backs. Perhaps one of the biggest benefits was that it meant that some countries were not colonised by Nazi Germany because the Brits had got there first in the last century.

Germany's 'scramble' for Africa (and other more distant territories) occurred before Nazism seized the state and society, and it was more interested in capturing near territories to enable lebensraum

Actually they do, quite often they will compare the punishment one player gets for a tackle with what happened in another match!!

Also, they aren't commentating on the same match every week!

So much fragility on this thread. Accepting that historical figures born on the same landmass as you did bad things isn't tantamount to admitting personal guilt. Why the need to offer up defences and caveats?

Oh, that's easy. People like to tell stories about themselves, their nationalities, their (non-)religions, their identities, etc, and to make these positive stories. They get offended when others try to suggest that there is more than one narrative framework out there.
