You probably didn’t look hard enough
There was a donation box at the door: really easy. I'm not about to go hunting around the church for a contactless connection hidden somewhere - it's a house of worship, not the Krypton Factor :lolol:

It's also the case that contactless may not be enough. I've just this minute come back from my local store and I couldn't use contactless payment, I had to put in my PIN. So, we're really talking about card readers.

If you're on a bus in a town clogged with cars and roadworks, you're not going anywhere in a hurry anyway
I’m not in a town clogged with cars and roadworks. I also use a service that is frequently running late for no other reason than the “you first” and “now, I have the exact change here somewhere, hold on, nope, oh what’s this, oh no, hold on”

Look, old people and idiots are going to be slower at getting on a bus. I totally understand and allow for that. But when old “you firsters ” have made the bus late already, we really could do without it at every stop.

Two things from a recent trip to Biarritz.

Cashless parking paypoints list FOUR different apps you can use to pay on the side of the machine. If there is an APP programmed by a Capita intern and signed off by a meglomaniac. No one is forced to use it.

MiPermit (Worthing) Gatwick Airport (NCP) and many others make this process, so utterly unpleasant and overly complex to what end?

Cashless payments on buses operate independently of the driver. Both prepayment cards and card/phone payments are supported.

The 700 bus here, takes payment at some random point hours/days after you have traveled and if for some reason there is a problem, they block your card for future use. Travel on any bus and you will here people who have come unstuck by this nonsense and have had to run off to find a cashpoint having missed their bus.

If this stuff is implemented properly it is an absolute breeze. Far too many F'wits making decisions in this country, without ever taking responsibility.

For balance I did have a lady help me with a train ticket machine. For some reason SNCF required an email address and mobile number to purchase a ticket. The SNCF employee used null@sncf.fr and a made up mobile number, which just showed you how stupid and unnecessary these steps were.

Once the older generation die out, we’ll not see much resistance to a cashless society.

The odd conspiracy theorist or dodgy geezer aside, most will welcome it.

I certainly will. No more old idiots fumbling around for change for the bus for a start. If we can just teach them to get on the effing bus rather than saying “you first” “no you first, dear” “no come on, you were here first” “no, no, you first” so we can all get on with our bloody day, that would be helpful.
If they're old, they'll have bus passes rather than cash or cards. I must say that they really speed up boarding a bus

I do think a lot of the perceived issues with cashless is more a lack of awareness than anything else. I'd hate it if we're all held back because a bloke in Burnley has not figured out how to pay his mate for a chip sandwich.
Chip butty. No such thing as a "chip sandwich" round here.

But how can the presence of cash hold anyone back? several people on here say they never use it. How would their lives be progressed by the abolition of a system that they never use?

Once they finally get on. Yep, passes are very quick but they squander their time advantage with their unnecessary politeness.

It’s the idiots with no forethought to get their change ready I was referring to.

Look, it’s not like I’m sat on the bus getting furious. It’s just a little life moan of mine. I don’t get heightened over it. Well, maybe the odd tut and eye roll. I’m an Englishman, after all.

Like I say, it's just people trying to be kind to each other. Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one

ive just been on cruise where your room key card is also the boarding card/passport and used in the bars and shops on the ship.

The card was presented to a terminal or tablet, your photo popped up so that the staff could see it was you. it was all then charged to your room and settled at the end of the week.

Really easy, fast and secure.

Yes I worried that people could spend a lot in the casino easily and I'm not sure if there were any safeguards there as I don't partake but it was a dream.

in fact thinking about it I also paid for anything on shore with my debt card so didn't have to get an local currency out either.

For me cash is a pain, I rarely have any and don't really miss it.

I'd say the biggest hold-up on buses by far is people trying to get their mobile tickets to work. Connectivity around Brighton is so poor, people are having to log into the bus's wifi to show a ticket. I'd say that this is an issue on most journeys I'm on (and, of course, could be solved by using cards).

Cash is a pain on the bus. I was held up for 15 minutes the other day because a driver wouldn't give change for a £20 note. The driver refused to let any other passenger pay his fare because he thought "he was trying it on". The bloke had to go and get change so he could pay to get on the bus. I wasn't in a hurry so I wasn't bothered but some passengers were getting quite heated.

My brother was a bus driver in the dim and distant past. One passenger regularly would get on the first bus of the day and offer a £10 note for a 3p fare. The driver couldn't change it, he'd have no change left, so the man was allowed to ride for free each day.

Revenge? The drivers all agreed to save their pennies and halfpennies (long time ago) and one day he boarded the bus, offered his £10 note, and was given £9.97 in pennies and halves. He didn't do it again!

I got on a bus once and asked for a return ticket.
The bus driver asked "where to?"
I said "back here."

Tickets usually use NFT functionality i.e. they don’t need connectivity?

Ive never had any trouble at all with my mobile ticket in five years of using it. I think they mean tapping phone to pay. That can be unreliable.

That will simply be the randomised security safeguard that requires PIN entry every so often

If it was a Marella cruise, I believe the casino is the one place where you do use cash.

Exactly - especially as banks charge businesses about 1% to pay in cash, hassle of transporting it, keeping it on site, risk of fake notes etc.

There really isn’t anything in it financially - certainly not the ‘cost of a pint’ on a £15 haircut
I disagree. If I tip My barber £2 and that had been a card transaction he could well have lost A the tip and B the£1 that would get him a pint (

They're the ones making a profit, strange huh. 🤷🏼‍♂️

A card transaction is 1.5%-1.75% - it’s never a pint
