See post 73.

The REMF. The REMF helps support kids from 5-16 in the UK and overseas to play football in the name and memory of Robert Eaton who would otherwise not have the facilities or resources to do so.

To be fair, we all know that. But all it really says is 'blah blah kids blah blah football'. Its not a strategy. What I'm saying is that, in my opinion, and of the friends I have discussed this with, is that many people would be far more likely to donate if they could be confident that the funds were going to causes they considered truly worthwhile. At the moment, to the outsider, it appears that the charity collects cash, and sits waiting for a local football club or similar to get in touch, and ask for a donation for a set of shirts (that frankly, the parents of the kids could hold a raffle, etc, to raise by themselves).

Now, from my previous experience of REMF, I myself know better. I know that donations were made to help Coaching For Hope, providing education through football, to AIDs sufferers in Africa, and that help was given to the Seagulls Specials, the Albion's disabled fans' team. These are genuinely good causes. Publicise them. Tell people about all the good things you would like to do with their generous donations. Sell it to them.

I don't think anyone could have put it better themselves. Personally I have donated to a number of NSC members in the short space of time that I have been a member and have only needed a brief rundown of to what they are raising funds for and the rest is just plain, good old fashioned trust that the funds end up going to the charity or project that they have described.

Well yes. I know you are sort of joking, but this is also a valid point. There are two approaches for sponsorship that will have me reaching for my cash - ones raising money for something important to me, and ones where the effort and sacrifice the fundraiser is making, earns my respect.

If you're doing an easy sponsored walk in aid of leukaemia research, or Macmillan Nurses, you'll get my cash.

If you're swimming the channel to buy your kids' team a new kit, you'll get my cash, because I'll be impressed.

If you're doing the walk, for the kit, you won't.

I have to be honest and say that if my sister had offered me a bike worth the same as I was going to raise by using it I'd have asked her to donate it direct and save me the aggro.

But then again I guess I wouldn't have got the attention.

It is not the case the REMF just waits for someone to ask for a donation and sits on its hands or waits for someone to contact the REMF. All requests go though a process and to see if the directors support it.

I can vouch for that.

Best of luck with the ride but seriously got to question your choice of bike. (In a good-natured way). Your arse is going to be red raw cycling that beast.

All the cyclists on the London to Brighton who do it for fun or to raise dosh go for the town/mountain bike sort of thing with comfy saddles. Have you thought of borrowing someone else's bike for the ride. Might be an idea.

Thanks for that. I was beginning to think I was the devil incarnate for tyring to raise funds for the REMF.

Do you know if she told him about the gift before giving it to him?

Having this bike will be good for US way beyond this particular challenge. If, as he says, he has not exercised for many years, he now has the means to do so, and his sister may have felt that this was something that she wanted to help him do. Exercise can make you happy. Cycling will possibly help US to become happier. For a sister, this would be very gratifying.

Not that it's anything to do with me, and I could be way off the mark. Uncle Spielberg is also raising quite a lot of money for a good cause. By shouting about it on here, he has helped raise his sponsorship considerably.

Why the need to criticise him continually?

So they are not 'waiting for someone to ask', or they are responding to 'requests'? Which is it? Does the charity have a clear idea about what it wants to achieve, or does it react to requests as they are presented?

Thanks for that. I was beginning to think I was the devil incarnate for tyring to raise funds for the REMF.

Grow up Gareth. These are valid points, relating to the Fund in general. It's not all about you.

Give me strength. I haven't once mentioned you, or your challenge. Not once.

I've asked sensible questions of the workings of the Fund that's all. I don't claim to speak on behalf for anyone but myself, but in my opinion, if you want people's cash, these are simple things they are entitled to know. Perhaps better discussed on a different thread though, rather than derailing yours. Apologies for that.

How little you know..

I've donated a few times before to the REMF but after that tirade I don't think I'll bother anymore.

Oh I see you can slate me but don't like it back.
