At the end of August/beginning of September 8 of us (7 adults 1 baby) will be travelling to Cornwall for 10 days from Manchester.
The current plan is to take our car and to hire another to give us enough seats for bums.

As my car is a high performance sports SUV it costs a fortune to run and is also leased with an annual mileage limit, I've been thinking about the cost effectiveness of hiring just one 8 seater vehicle and us all travelling together.

The pro's of this are that it could be quite fun all travelling in one vehicle. Only one lot of fuel to pay for. No mileage on my own car etc.
The cons are that I just went on the Avis car rental app and the calculatior told me it would be SIX THOUSAND POUNDS!!!

So, can the wise collective of NSC give me any suggestions or advice? We've no experience of travelling as a big family together before so never had to think about it. Am I missing anything?
Does anyone have any experience of hiring this type of vehicle? Have I done something wrong on the car hire app? Are there any companies who specialise in larger vehicles and might be a lit cheaper than £6k? Anyone work in car hire and care to quote me?

Thanks.

Oh and Potter Out!

£1500 should cover it ...less than £2k with all waivers etc.

Just a thought: if the minibus has more than eight passenger seats excluding the driver, you'll need a D1 category on your licence to drive it.

If you passed your test before 1997 (I think it's 1997- it's definitely somewhere around that point), you'll have D1. If not, you won't.

£6000? That's £600 a day, which seems very excessive. Try elsewhere, I guess - or buy an elderly one (some of those 15-20 year old Japanese diesels will go for ever!) for less than that, even if you take a couple of grand loss on it when you come to re-sell it.

Maybe it's going for an eight seater that's the problem. 10 days for about two and a half thousand quid with a 7 seater seems pretty universal - any of your party elderly and likely to pop off before you go? Or perhaps one of your party would like to go by coach? - probably about a hundred quid or less.

Given excess mileage on a lease car is generally ‘a few pence’ per mile (mines 7p) I still can’t work out how it’s going to be cheaper to rent ? Unless it’s a look at me brag

Sigh. It's definitely not a car for bragging about, it's just the 18 mpg that's annoying. I estimate the cost of fuel for my car will be about £600 for the holiday (2 tanks there, 2 while we're there and 2 to get back). Plus the fuel in the second car we would need to hire and I thought we'd be getting close to making it more cost effective to hire one large vehicle. But it seems not.

I'm not that old (just), but I do have D1. An 8 seater would do though. Thanks.

18mpg sounds very low for a long motorway journey, what car is it?
