I was there. I had just started my first job and had some money in my pocket to buy my own ticket to the East terrace.

35 years later, Jimmy Collins tiled my bathroom. He was almost crawling up the stairs. Hard to imagine how brilliant he was that season.

Still one of my favourite seasons.
102 league goals, and the bonus of Norman Wisdom on the pitch at halftime in the match against Chesterfield (?).

I was at Norman's match with my Dad - to see him clowning on a football pitch was hilarious.

Bobby Smith was a revelation - overweight and slow but was the most skilful player on the pitch and almost guaranteed us a goal every match he played.

Surprisingly not top scorer , that honour went to Wally Gould with 21 goals if I remember correctly.

I was down from London for the whole of the school holiday - we didn’t move down until the following year.- from ‘58 to ‘65 I only saw home games during holidays although I got to see us away at the (lower league) London grounds. My nan who lived in Hove used to send me the Argus match reports in the post once a month to binge read

East terrace for me too, towards the north end, but quite low down close to the pitch, where I could see Smith (not difficult given the lad's size). Not where I stood for most of that season though which was still on the east terrace, but on the short section between the north-east floodlight and the North Stand. Certainly remember standing there for the Darlington game at the end of the season.

One of the odd memories of that day was the state of Barrow's shirts. I think they were maroon in colour, but although it was the first day of the season, they were all old with holes and tears in them....! Grim up north, etc.

Yes it was Chesterfield where Norman Wisdom gave his halftime rendition of GOSBTS.

Looking back at the season, I think all the opponents were so concerned about Bobby Smith that they usually put 2 defenders on him which opened the way for the more than half decent Division 4 players like Wally Gould, Jimmy Collins, Jack Smith, Johnny Goodchild (and Bill Cassidy?) to score so many goals.

Here's a photo, from the 65/66 season handbook, of Smith in typical goalscoring mode. Think this was the Tranmere game later in the season.
