94-5 to 326 all out. That just about sums England up on this tour. Early wickets raising hopes then a complete inability to finish them off.
In the recent past we have relied on Swann whittling out all the left handers in the Aussie lower order but they have adjusted their batting order to counteract this. Swann was ineffective on this tour and eventually gave up, blaming injury. The stats show how inaccurate our bowling has been. People have been lauding up Broad for his efforts but he is as culpable as the rest. In England, he and Anderson know they can fire it wide and then rely on the swing to do the rest. Down Under, you have to bowl line and length or rely on pure unadulterated pace. We have done neither. Our batsman have chickened out against Johnson and made him look like a world beater.
The sooner this wretched series is over the better. It has been like a slow, lingering, inevitable death. No one in the squad has had the ability to turn it around. No one has shown the character to battle it out,to try and stem the tide. We have lacked direction from the management and strong leadership on the field. The senior pro's have been allowed to get away with limp submission.
And yet....what do I hear....." Cook must stay as captain....he gets respect from his teammates "...What crap....He gets respect from them because he is soft on them!!..Its been like a little self-congratulatory club. We are a top side and all we have to do is turn up and the Aussies will roll over. What they've needed is a bit of f--king hairdryer this series. A bit of good, honest eyeballing ranting. A bit of dressing-down. A bit of reminding to these players what they owe the fans who have gone out to support them and the many who stay up late to watch and listen. Cook is a poor captain. He lacks mental strength. He doesn't command on the pitch. He has let this series drift to its inevitable conclusion, hoping that things would turn round by themselves.
And then I hear that Flower has no intention of stepping down and has unfinished work to do.....More like a big fat salary to keep earning. So he obviously doesn't feel that he is any way accountable for this shambles and by reason should fall on his sword.
Incredible..the arrogance of these people. " Its only a temporary blip, we will be back on course soon " He and his team have been completely outthought by Lehmann and his average team. They have been hammered out of sight in four Tests. Not one has been close!!!
This cosy little Essex arrangement. This little cartel that has built up around Cook and Flower and Gooch and prominent media personalities e.g Ronnie Irani and Darren Gough ( who have spent every waking hour promoting the cause of ' Team Flower / Team Cook ' ) has to be blown to pieces. It has all become too cosy, too smug, too complacent. The Aussies sensed this and carefully and calculatingly, set out to undermine and expose the frailty.
Changes have to made at the top. Flower and Gooch have to go and so does Cook as captain. This wretched and inept performance doesn't deserve any second chance. There is no coming back from this. This is the pits. Nothing has ever been as bad as this, given the circumstances ( quality of opposition or lack of it etc ) If it was football, Flower would have gone after two Tests but it isn't. Cricket is slower to react and quicker to make excuses. " These are good players who will come good again "
Sorry...they are not good players on the evidence of this series. They haven't shown the necessary fight expected of a national team. They have given away the most precious prize in cricket with barely a whimper.
We have been reduced to clutching at straws. The press are saying that it is vital we prevent 5-0. 4-1 would be so much better. What utter bollocks. Even if England scored 600 and won this Test by an innings, I wouldn't gain the slightest scrap of satisfaction from it. For me, it would be too little too late. Damage done. Humiliation heaped on us from a great height. In the fourth Test the Aussies eased off but still thrashed us. That surely, is the saddest indictment on this shambles.

Wow what a great rant !

I totally agree and can see another whitewash coming in the one day series- I just hope I am wrong.

This stat shows the level of commitment the Aussies have:

Australia's first-innings fight backs

Brisbane: 100-5 to 295 all out

Adelaide: 257-5 to 570-9 dec

Perth: 143-5 to 385 all out

Melbourne: 164-9 to 204 all out

Sydney: 97-5 to 326 all out

Yep, can you imagine the s*** we would be in if Australia had a decent top order ?

I just hope that this is not the start of another reign of Aussie superiority in Cricket. You guys are terrible winners :) I am used to England being beaten but I am getting a bit fed up of reading all the coaching and team selection advice from your guys to the England team. (PS. I didn't gloat last summer -well, not much)

Yes congratulations. England should have spotted the issues in the summer - we were very lucky then. I thought the decisions that Lehmann made were excellent and paved the way for this - Next Ashes series will be interesting - I suspect both teams will be a bit different by then

I'm not so sure this is an 'average' Aussie team. Harris, Siddle, Johnson and Watson is a pretty decent attack (Lyon is ok...)....

Rodgers and Warner can open, and open quickly scoring lots of runs.

Watson also scores quickly...

Clarke, Smith and Haddin can grind out runs and score BIG when you need them most....

Your tail? Well they wag. Unlike the English tail.

Is this Aussie team peaking during this series? Maybe... But who cares, the Aussies hold the Ashes... And will go on to win 5-0 with ease.

England must rebuild, but we knew that as soon as Trott went home...

Young Borthwick got destroyed 49 off 7 overs I see, great way to blood in the young players. Carberry showing why Root was dropped too, oh wait.....

It's much to do with the mentality from a very early age. Having been schooled in Australia the whole approach to sport is very different. I don't like nor agree with a lot of the 'Aussie' banter and headlines etc. the Australians and press don't do themselves any favours but that stems from the mentality towards sports at an early age. A real passion to play for the flag. This is lacking in English cricket and football. A real hatred of losing. The headlines and defeat in the summer hurt and players like Mitchell Johnson thrive on that.

The English learn that taking part is the main thing..

Errrr yea when you're 4.... Not 24 or 34! All about winning!

Very frustrating, on this pitch there was no need for a 5th bowler an attack of Stokes, Broad, Anderson & Monty was more than enough backed up by Root's off spin.

This was a good toss to win the pitch was conjusive to seam and swing with a bit of uneven bounce. Broad & Anderson were all over the Aussie's at 4 and 5 down and then we completely released the pressure by bowling Boyd-Rankin who bowled either too short or floaty half volley's, he seemed to be putting the ball there rather than bowling it.

Borthwick was going at 7 per over and although he bowled a few nice deliveries as expected from a young leggie making his debut he served up a fair amount of dross. Smith & Haddin knew once they saw Anderson & Broad off runs would flow and they did.

Very encouraging from Stokes who has been the one bright spark for us and although he is expensive he bowls a good wicket taking length.

Poor decision making from the selectors, captain & coach we really need a sixth batsman at present and the pitch was sporting enough to play just the four bowlers. Hopefully the six wicket haul from Stokes will convince them that when required he can fill the 3rd seamer role.

That's a good rant and I agree re Flower and Gooch, but who have we to replace Cook as Captain? I see no-one in or around this team that is Captain material. Stick with what you know - Michael Clarke was getting grief not long ago for his poor captaincy and now, all of a sudden, he is a genius.

Stick with Cook for now in the absence of anyone else.

Think your missing the point but proving my point

Sorry. I missed your point! I think you were agreeing with me.
Anyway. It doesn't start as young as 4 but by the age of under 9's in both cricket and football the level of competition was seriously intense. I never remember feeling pressured by it, it was just how it was.
The lifestyle also has a massive factor. Life revolves around outdoor living and activities. Every weekend involved family picnics with all generations playing cricket together.
Happy times

At least Clarke could still score runs as a bonus. We have a captain who can't bat or captain.

So you would dump the youngest ever batsmen to 8000 test runs and potentially our best batsman ever? Don't think Clarke has scored many this series either has he?
The major difference between the teams has been Brad Haddin - had we skittled him out cheaply every innings, it would have been a lot closer.
