I realised this today too having listened en route to work and been confused not to hear any chat about us. Very strange - anyone know why!?

When on our game, we're as good as anyone, including the City Liverpool and Arsenal. Trouble is Chelsea, villa Fulham Bournemouth Tottenham Newcastle and Manchester United (with new manager) will only get better and all will be pushing. It'll be a hugely tough ask but an amazing feat if we did it!

Ferdi is the Right back and I'm unsure if we will sign a centre back with our current squad. 5 players can easily play there and do a decent job

But the mechanism we are using, which seems to be hardwired into the manager and every player I hear interviewed, is we aim to win every game, plan to do so, and look to fix anything that didn't work. Rinse and repeat.

I like him - except when he's on with that billy-goat, Savage, when the pair of them regularly risk descending into a pre-pubescent parody of Derek and Clive.
He reminds me a bit of Adrian Chiles. When they started their media careers they seemed to know f*** all about anything a centimeter beyond their own bubbles, and seemed surprised anything even existed a centimeter beyond their own bubble, but they have made some effort to engage with other viewpoints, even if they will never properly understand them. That's more than most of us set out to achieve.

I listened to the podcast all the way through and nothing about us. As @BadFish said, it's shorter than on IPlayer. We obviously didn't make the podcast cut, but why would they need to cut the podcast!? Seems weird.
Have now listened/watched on IPlayer. Great to hear, but so much of the season left. As one of them said, we had a great start last year and fell away badly. Still, dreamland stuff really!

6th would only qualify for Champions League football if 5th wins either the Champions League or Europa League. If any of the top 4 win the CL/EL then 5th place would still get the extra co-efficient spot.
Atalanta won the Europa League and finished 4th last season. Bologna who finished 5th got the extra co-efficient spot. Roma who finished 6th went into the Europa League.
This is because the place for the winners of the Champions League and Europa are only reserved for them in the event they don't qualify through their domestic league, the places don't then shift down the league. If they have already qualified then other changes are made to the qualification process that sees various teams enter the qualification rounds later than they would have done based on club co-efficient scoring.
However the 2 places granted to the best performing national associations from the previous season are reserved exclusively for teams that haven't already qualified for Champions League football (either through their domestic league or by winning the CL/EL). That means if a team finishes 5th and has won either the CL or EL then the co-efficient place would transfer down to the next team to have not qualified.
In theory there is a scenario where the extra spot goes to 7th, if 5th and 6th win the Champions League and Europa League.

I seem to remember, maybe, that he doesn’t like buying in January. The feeling being that clubs buy in January because they need to, whereas you buy in the summer because you want to. I’m trying to remember which player Brighton signed in January in recent years and the only one that springs to mind is Anthony Knockaert in 2016.

And if the "need" is to reinforce a squad that has got into the top 4 places, to help secure that opportunity, then maybe he would?
I appreciate that Tony doesn't like to buy in January- it smacks of poor planning- but he might in order to press home a strong first half of the season?

That's the thing! Everyone will nick points off everyone. At moment only Liverpool are consistent enough. Just over a quarter of season gone and we've lost the same amount of games as arsenal and City. Long long way to go.

Beram Kayal, Moises Caicedo, Alexis Mac Allister and Facundo Buonanotte were all recent(ish) January signings. Although work permit rules prevented Alexis from joining up with the squad for a year. Valentin Barco signed last January as well and Gomez is meant to be joining from Inter Miami as soon as the window opens too.
Even going back a few more years Leo Ulloa was another January signing. Matthew Upson and Steve Sidwell both joined on loan in January windows before becoming permanent signings in the following summer.
So while Tony Bloom has admitted he isn't a fan of the January window and doesn't do massive amounts of business in it, we still do sign players and have picked up several key players during January windows.
